Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, March 9, 1993--31 4% CITIZEN SPORT SHORTS Pearce Novice Auctioneers After the emotional high of a super comeback series win over Cobourg, this weekend was a letdown for our squad as we quickly fell behind 2 games to zero in the Eastern Ontario Finals. It was apparent to the fans that OMHA had goofed in their organization of the Novice playoff system as the "AA" Bellevillle team (Belleville's population is 37,000!) fully utilized their numerical advantage and easily controlled the puck throughout both games. The opener of the best-of-five series was in the Belleville rink and thanks to some key saves by Thomas Lee and D'arcy Stephens our lads headed for home with a respectable loss by only a 3-1 score. In the second period, we took advantage of a line change and defenceman Gerard Timmers made some nifty moves to drill a shot on the Belleville goalie. Like the coaches say , you "always follow the puck to the net" and Trevor Lance was rewarded with a big rebound which he tucked into the net for our marker. Our boys had to adjust to "going over the boards" for line changes for the first time ever, as the Belleville visitors bench had only 1 gate. In any case , full marks to the Belleville players who outhustled us in this as well as the second game with good positional play, rapid puck pursuit and relentless back checking. Game two at home got off to a bad start as Belleville got on-the board with less than a minute gone in the game. This was a bad sign as our lads had hoped to score first and steal some wind from the Belleville sails. Our team discipline broke down thereafter and our faceoff coverage as well as our man-to- man defence disappeared. The Belleville squad gave our players some lessons in the fine art of "stickwork" throughout the non- contest. Despite the blow-out score, there were some bright moments over the weekend however. Our defence of Scott Duncan, Gerard, Dane Gray and Tim Jones fought valiantly in numerous 3 on 1 and 3 on 2 Belleville rushes. In game two, (where we actually had more shots on goal than in the first game) several goal posts and good Belleville goal-tending prevented our forwards from ruining the Belleville shut-out. Our forward lines for the playoff series have been Trevor Weisflock centering Mike Milligan and veteran Adam Moynes, veterans Mike Lefort and Dean VanCamp with the diminutive Matt Skerratt, and finally the all-rookie line of centre Trevor Lance between Mike Wiseman and Jeff Tarbotton. Keep your heads up guys : these game scores aren't indicative of the courage you've shown in the playoffs. Stick to the hockey basics from practice lessons and just try to cover your own man and territory and momentum may shift to our side again. Your fans and community are proud of your sportsmanship and "never- say- die" attitude. Guardian Drugs Ringette Saturday, March 6, the Guardian Drugs Tween 'A' Ringette team travelled to Markham to play for the "League Championship". Once again, the Port girls displayed their keen talent as they skated miles and were "first to the ring" almost every time. By half time, each team was exhausted. They both were playing handicapped with injured and absent players. You were certainly missed. Natasha, who was hurting badly, and" Brooke set Shona up for Port's first goal. Soon after, Janna made a timely pass to Janine who put one away. Markham added to the excitement tieing the score at 2-2. Bonni-Jo made a beautiful interception at the blue line and deaked the goalie out for a 3-2 lead. Brooke set Dana up as she placed one high in the corner. rkham retaliated to make it only a one goal spread. Eight seconds later Natasha demonstrated her defensive power skating past 3 of Markham's players. She spied Heather in the open who made an accurate pass to Shona. She dazzled their goalie and their whole team with her sisal Products Limited SINCE 1969 LINDSAY * (1/4 Mile East of No. 12) CONSUMER GAS C FINANCING AVAILABLE (ENERCY SAVING) WINDOWS & PATIO DOORS | ENERGY EFFICIENT WINDOWS REDUCE DRAFTS and INCREASE WARMTH. | ALCAN 8H SERIES WINDOWS ONTARIO HYDRO REBATE" *(on select products for qualifying ith electric heat Allen's Siding Sales & Installation DOORS - WINDOWS - TROUGH - ADDITIONS - SOLARIUMS (705) 326-1402 (705) 878-2023 Reach Industrial Park - Reglonal Road 8 RENOVATIONS on ALL ALC ' Ab, " qualify for the CEE EE Faeroe PORT PERRY (416) 985-3333 FREE ESTIMATES OMERS - for COMPLETE new backward "tight ring shot". The Guardian squad were totally amazed at their 5-3 lead as this Markham team is an 'AA' team and Port is an 'A' team. To secure the lead, Shona scored again unassisted deaking the goalie out. This shot caused Markham's goalie to backwards and the result was a re-occurring back injury. With nine minutes left and leading by 3 goals, Port hoped they had the championship in the bag. NOT! Their second goalie, who had never played in net before, was absolutely amazing. She saved numerous excellent shots. Special mention goes to Brooke and Laura on their many unsuccessful shots on the goalie. Katie was kept busy the whole game by a determined bunch of girls who are not used to being on the losing side. She challenged all their shots and only let one in during the second period to take the championship 6-4. The girls are extremely anxious for the strong competition awaiting them March 25-28 at the Provincial Championship in Ottawa. XL Eaglettes The Port Perry XL Gas Bar Novice team skated away with the gold medal in the C Division at the Oro Tournament held on the weekend. This brings the total to 3 gold and 1 silver for '93. All the girls are playing their best ringette so far and putting it all together on the ice as a team. In the previous league game, the XL'ers easily handled Scarborough # to a tune of 12- Yn oro, with the withdrawal of one team, the girls had to face both Oro Novice teams and ended up playing the Oro Orange squad for the gold. The Eaglettes, with super ositional play and great passing, won their games by scores of 9-1, 14-0 and 8-3 in the final. That brings the girls record to 27-3-3 for the season and makes one curious as to how the team would do if moved up to the B Division. The big sharpshooter in the past week (4 games) has been Alaina Burger with 9 goals and 2 assists. Stacey Cunningham clicked in for 4 goals and 6 assists followed by Nicole Virtue who chipped in with 4 goals and 3 assists. Katherine Cooke popped in 4 goals and 2 assists while Leanne Layzell and Rhea Baxter collected 2 goals and 4 assists each. Jackie Pashley has shown the biggest improvement lately with great passing and solid skating and she proved it with two 2 goal games and a single for 5 big markers. Another Eaglette who has been playing more aggressively and being rewarded with her increased play is Kristen Waller with 2 goals and 3 assists. Heater Reid, who has been giving us a solid and sound defense along with the opportunity to play forward, made the scoresheet for 1 goal and 4 assists. And then there's our great little skater, Sarah Verschuuren who even played goal for a game and got the shutout to go along with her 2 goals and 3 assists. Shannon Warriner, playing in her first year, has shown steady improvement and is patrolling her right wing with great confidence and displaying some scoring touch with 2 goals and 3 assists. Alaina Davis, who has been moving up and playing forward lately, is also taking advantage of her scoring chances and recorded 3 goals and 1 assist. The half of our goaltending tandem, Janna Ostafichuk, played out all weekend, both at defense and forward and she collected 3 assists in a solid 2- way effort. Jill Pashley recorded 2 wins in the cage and played her usual rock-steady self and even got into the scoring when playing forward with a tally of 1 goal and 2 assists. It was a great team effort and the improved play around the net and the excellent passing combinations and the fine execution of the 3-player in rule will be a great asset in the last month of the season in the Eaglettes drive to the league and regional championships.
