day, March 16, 1993 =z =" 30-- Scugog Citizen -- Tu White Feather Store a family success story by Heather McCrae This Wednesday marks the fifth anniversary of the White Feather Country Store in Raglan. A store that offers country charm, it's well known for its delicious home baking, delightful country crafts and collectibles, and of course, its farm fresh eggs. Forty years ago the Schillings family started their egg business on a farm located on Scugog Island. Ten years later the family moved their _ business to where it is now located on Raglan Road. Just a few short years ago, when the eggs were sold out of the farmhouse in Raglan, Liz. Schillings had a vision of building a little country store, selling popular items customers might wish to purchase when they picked up their eggs. Small crafts, home- baking and fresh produce were what Liz had in mind. And this vision became a reality five years ago when the country store in Raglan officially opened. The store and White Feather Farms, which are adjacent to the store, are family owned and operated by the Schillings family. Their fresh eggs are what has made White Feather Farms famous today. Liz says her mother, Else, is the backbone of the entire operation, tending to all the secretarial duties. Liz's brother, Hubert, is the farm manager and her sister, Maria, the assistant manager. Another sister, Karen, and her husband will be the managers of a new store opening in Belleville at the beginning of April. Liz will be doing the buying for the new store, somewhat similar to the Raglan store, but on a smaller scale. So, just how does one make a small business grow and be so successful in these recessionary times? Liz, who is Liz Schillings, at right, owner of the White Feather Country Store in Raglan and employee Yvonne Vandervoort, who has worked at the store since it opened 5 years ago. the owner and manager of the Raglan store, attributes her success to her wonderful staff. "You couldn't ask for better staff," she says. They do everything from packing food, displaying the products attractively and picking eggs, not just standing behind the cash register every day. Being friendly, helpful and courteous to their customers is their number one priority. In the beginning the store offered fresh fruits and vegetables, a few crafts and, of course, eggs. Once famous for its eggs alone, White Feather Farms now is known for so much more. Today the store specializes in a quality line of frozen fruits and vegetables, pies, boxed meats and seafoods. An abundant supply of fine pastries, breads and other home-made delicacies fill their shelves. Gift baskets, made to order, are a popular item, filled with homemade jams, cheeses, flavoured coffees and teas. And, of course, those farm fresh eggs are always available. Crafts such as pillows, fabric coasters, afghans, wooden shadow boxes and miniature shelves are just some of the crafts the store carries. A popular treat, only available on Sundays, are delicious apple fritters, made on the premises. In the beginning the staff baked twenty of these goodies, but because of their popularity, have increased the number to over one hundred now.
