Il Uprights ($649) ..... 4 Months Interest Free Payment OAC - wp 96-- Scugog Citizen ~ Tu , March 30, 1993 Derbyshire brings a touch of England A touch of England arrived in Port Perry with the opening of the classy Derbyshire Arms Pub and Restaurant. The Derbyshire opened its doors Saturday afternoon on North Street and owners Peter and Eileen Chetwynn were pleased to see a brisk business that day. The owners are originally from Great Britain and now live south of Uxbridge. Peter said they often visited Port Perry and used to talk casually about some day opening an English style pub here. Things began to get serious about a year ago when Peter accepted an "early retirement" from the National Westminster Bank where he had worked 30 years and was a senior vice president. \ "I certainly wasn't ready to stop working," he told the Citizen in an interview over the weekend. He purchased the building on North Street from Ted Blanchard (it was formerly Radio Shack and Blanchard Pools) and just about two months ago started extensive renovations. In fact, they were still putting the "finishing touches on" just hours before the first customers arrived at noon on Saturday. Taking full advantage of the high pitched ceiling of the building, the Derbyshire is bright and airy with attractive wall paper off-set by deep green carpeting and matching covers on the chairs. "We are trying to create a certain atmosphere where people can enjoy a good meal and good conversation," Peter The piped music is played at low volume and when the TV sets are on for a sporting event, there is no volume at all. Special attention was given to the menu which features a wide variety of pub fare, including traditional favourites like "English Fry Up" and "Bangers and Mash." Over the supper hour, there will be daily specials like stuffed chicken and prime rib. Home made pies are a staple on the dessert menu. One distinctive feature is the bar, crafted from oak cut from trees on the Chetwynn property near Uxbridge. And behind the bar, patrons will find a choice of 12 drafts, including four imported --- Guiness, Bass, Double Diamond and Smithwick's which is proving very popular to the Canadian palate. No English pub would be complete without a dart board. Two will be set up in the Derbyshire and Peter hopes that a league team can be established. Though his parents operated a pub in England when he was a youngster, Peter says opening his own was not necessarily a life long dream. But after leaving his career in banking he was far too young for the rocking chair.
