wy" 6-- Scugog Citizen - Tuesday, March 30, 1993 a Metal chimneys could be safety hazard The Ontario Fire Marshall is warning that certain kinds of metal chimneys may pose a serious safety hazard. The chimneys are mass insulated, double walled and made from metal, according to information from the Fire Marshall's office. Studies done on some 1500 factory-built fireplace chimneys showed that six per cent had perforation due to corrosion Scugog Township Fire Chief Don Steele said the potential danger is serious, and any home owner who suspects problems in these kind of chimneys can contact the Fire Marshall's office at 1-800-268 6187 immediately The metal chimneys in question have inner and outer liners made from various types and grades of steel. These inner and outer lines are separated by insulation made of silica and mineral wool. Ae The corrosion is caused when insulation containing chlorides reacts with moisture to create an acid, which in turn corrodes the metal. The problem first surfaced about two 'years ago in a Pickering subdivision when some chimneys began falling off the roofs of the houses An investigation revealed that corrosion had taken place in the pre-fabricated metal chimneys, causing them to lose their structural stability and in some cases falling right off the roofs. Not only that, the corrosion caused weakening around the Joints which could result in a fire in materials surrounding the chimney. If the corrosion is advanced, it can lead to flue gases or burning embers getting into concealed areas within the home. Corrosion of the inner liner can lead to insulation blocking the chimney and resulting in a build-up of deadly carbon monoxide fumes. The Ontario Fire Marshall is urging homeowners to inspect chimneys inside and outside " the home. And it is especially important that homeowners understand that corrosion can occur on parts of the chimney located in concealed spaces within the home. It is crucial that these concealed areas be inspected as well. If homeowners find evidence of corrosion, they should try to contact the manufacturer to determine if repairs or replacement are covered by warranty. The corrosion problems are not associated with any particular year, make or model of chimney, and the problems are not restricted to any area of the country.
