Starting April 1, the ceiling for suits was raised from $3,000 to $6,000. Small Claims Courts (there are 98 in the province) provide "a simple and inexpensive way to settle disputes about money, debts and damages. It also provides a forum where people can launch of defend their own suits without the need of a lawyer," said Attorney general Marion Boyd last week. Judging by the increase in claims over the last three years (from $124 million in 1990 to a projected $164 million this year) more people than ever are using Small Claims Court. Here in Durham Region, figures show that in 1991, there were 3786 claims filed. That number went up considerably in 1992 with the filing of 4818 claims. - The process of using Small Claims Court is fairly simple. Here are a few suggestions if you are considering this route and have never done this before. WHERE DO I GO? You must file your claim in the office in the area where of these conditions applies: where the problem occurred; where the party against whom the claim is filed (the defendant) lives of carries on business; where the court's place of sitting (courtroom) is nearest to where the defendant lives or carries on business. GETTING STARTED: Your first step is choosing the right Court in which to file your claim. Then, pick up the right form at the Claims Court, fill it out, and mail it or take it in person to the correct court. When you file the claim, you will have to pay a court fee for the cost of handling the claim and delivering it to whoever you are suing. The fee demands on the amount you defendants who have to be served, and the distance between the court office and where the claim is being served on the defendant(s) These fees are added to your claim if you are successful in court. Mother cat 'adopts' five baby raccoons Five baby raccoons have a new "mom" at the Scugog Uxbridge Animal Shelter. The coons, less than a week old have been "adopted" by a Calico cat and for the last few days have been happily nursing and gaining strength. The coons were brought to the Animal Shelter last week after they were found in a barn recently, abandoned by their own mother. "We weren't sure what to do with them," said Animal Control officer Ann Barrett. The Shelter just happ surviving kitten. At first, she wanted nothing to do with the coons, hissing in anger. But within a few hours, she changed her mind and allowed them to snuggle up to her stomach for nourishment. And they seem to the doing very nicely, thank you. Ms. Barrett said this is not an unusual situation for a mother cat to "adopt" babies like this. Once the coons are strong enough to be on their own, theyll be placed in temporary have the female cat who had given birth to a litter of kittens. Several died, so staff decided to put the tiny coons with the cat and her lone "foster care" outside the shelter dto and lly rel d to the wilds. In the meantime, they coons and 'the kitten seem quite content to share their new "mom."
