~ Tuesday, April 6, 1993 Port Perry Tweens take All Ontario silver medals The finest "A" ringette teams from across Ontario gathered for the provincials in Nepean starting March 25th. Port Perry's Guardian Drug "A" team had gained entry with their decided victory over Pickering to represent Ontario's Central Region. The weather was hot, the team sharp and the facilities terrific. The players, coaches and fans were nervous and excited hoping that Port's Tweens would leave an impact upon their opposition and bring home a medal. They did! Our first game was a 7-2 victory against Mississauga Highlights - a hat trick by Heather Tredway, two from Shona Moase, and singles to Dana Hooker and Janine Hammond. Every player earned at least one point while providing the victory. Woolwich, our next opponents, played a penalty- free game. This proved to be ° Port Perry's undoing. After the first period it was tied 3-3. Woolwich dominated the second and coasted to a 7-4 win. This loss may have been a blessing in disguise, as Port's lized that another loss Even the referees were tired after this one. Thunder Bay struck first, but once again, Janine Hammond's fine shooting produced two quick goals and Port ended the first period ahead 3-1. "The Bay' closed the gap to 3-2 before Janine pocketed her third Port's number one players in this contest were Laura Hooker with 4 assists and Bonni-Jo Norton on defence, whose intuitive checking and - passing kept them at bay Next came the hometown favourite, Nepean, who needed a win to stay in contention. The name of the game was defence and goaltending. Janna Senyk, Brooke Shanley, Natasha Burgess and Bonni-Jo Norton would not allow Nepean to pierce the defensive triangle. Anything that got through, Katie was there to stop. Leading 2-1, with 30 seconds left, Port's Tweens were in control until a rebound was batted in for a tie. Heart- stopping action in this sudden- death overtime kept the fans in suspense when Shona Moase grabbed a Cara Vander Slagt girls could put us out of the medal round. Dana Hooker with a goal and an assist was Port's best player of the game. The pre-tourney favourite, Ottawa, was full of confidence Figuring that the best way to beat Port Perry was to shadow Shona Moase, they did and this left the door wide open for Janine Hammond to score her hat trick and lead Port to a 6-3 win. Katie Senyk was solid in goal, as she would be for the whole tournament. Each game had now become a must-win and the coaches were wondering if Port's Tweens could keep up their intensity. Thunder Bay had flown in to the capital for the provincial's and they were flying on ice. There were only three penalties in this match-up - probably the fastest and sharpest game this season for Port's Tweens. bound and scored the game winner with 1:06 remaising. Fine back-checking and two assists earned Cara Vander Slagt first star in this one. Even with a 4-1 record a berth in the final would not be possible without a win over Sudbury, and Sudbury knew a loss would send them home on the bus. The referees lost control of this one as the penalty boxes were overflowing. An injury early in the game put Heather Tredway out Playing short-handed, Natasha Burgess' determined effort netted the goal to break Sudbury's back. Somehow, Port's forwards maintained self-control against team, thanks to the guidance and encouragement of Brian Shanley. With three minutes left and two girls in the sin bin, Sudbury narrowed the gap to 6-56 but Katie Senyk and her goal posts took control. Port Perry's defence was outstanding Jo, Janna, Brooke and Natasha ! Scenario Sudbury possession, [1 seconds remaining, free pass shot on the mark and Katie Senyk grabs the ring before it crosses the line - to hold it high in the air! The girls had done it! This was the most satisfying win of the Provincials and meant a berth in the championship against the defending champions - Thunder Bay A huge crowd watched the final. Port's Tweens were nervous and it showed as Thunder Bay jumped into & 3-0 lead after only five minutes Not giving up, Shona Moase scored her first (of 3) and Janine Hammond added another. Port's girls played their hearts out but it was not meant to be as Thunder Bay held on for a 6-4 final. After the presentation, the girls realized that they had not lost the gold - they had won the silver. They had been the only team to beat Thunder Bay on the march to the championship game. T would like to thank the 11 girls for their 110% effort, the coaching staff of Diane Hooker, Brian Shanley and Laurie and Walter Senyk, the team commitment to sportsmanship and gamesmanship, our sponsor, Guardian Drugs, our ringette association for their support, the Durham Region i; i A ra Hooker.
