my" ougog Citizen -- Tuesday, April 6, 1995 -- 37 4% Legion team finishes year in Buffalo The past weekend saw the climax of what has been a splendid year for the Pee Wee Legion A team, as we ventured to Buffalo for the annual Pepsi Invitational Hockey tournament. In the-first two games, the boys found as many goals as the mothers found shopping bargains. Our first game on Friday evening saw us against Tonawanda, New York, and for the first 65 minutes, we bombarded the goalie with shots; but it was not until 5:26 when Mike Morden -got the . wagon rolling on an unassisted goal, and in the second, Adam .Jones 'got our second unassisted as well. Late in the second, Scott Heffern counted our third with assists to Jay Strickert and Adam Jones. In the third, Rob Murphy took a pass from Scott Heffern for our fourth, and with :49 seconds left, Adam got his second, after a nice passing from both Scott Heffern and Mike Morden. ~ Luke. Carnaghan earned the shut out and received a big cheer, and Scott Heffern was awarded the game MVP. : Our second game, Saturday morning, was against the New Jersey Devils (pee wee calibre), and the results:were the same, with Port ending up on top 7-0 at the end. . Although. we dominated the game New Jersey had a red hot goaltender and we could not beat him in the first period. "It was not until the middle of the second period that we finally beat him and once again, Mike Morden got the cart going. Mike picked up the ind puck at the blue-line and broke in on the goalie and beat him cold. Scott Heffern and Seth Gray earned the assists. Then Jay Strickert took off on a scoring rampage and counted the next 3, with all being assisted by Shane Norton and 2 by Daryl McEnaney. Nice hat trick Jay! Scott Heffern got our fifth, unassisted and at this point, the wagon was rolling at full speed. The next goal almost sent the wagon into "warp" speed as Mike Heasman decided that he wanted in on the fun. Mike had narrowly missed about 4 goals to this point, but he captured "his first of the year as he broke in on the goalie and beat him with a blistering wrist shot. Jay Strickert and, Shane Norton assisted. Nice work Mike. Our newebt addition, Derek Tindall rounded out the scoring with help from Seth Gray and Rob Murphy. Luke Carnaghan also earned this shut-out and Jay Strickert was chose MVP. Our final game Saturday night was a bit disappointing when we came up against Bradford who we had put out in the All-Ontario series. Bradford had something to prove as the winner of this game would advance to the championship game, and they landed us a 5-2 defeat. Shane Norton tied the game at one each late in the first when he was set up by Jay Strickert and *Daryl, then Daryl tied it at two in the middle of the second, unassisted. But Bradford counted twice more in the last 2 1/2 minutes, to end the second 4-2. No Karaoke This Weekend - Easter! THE W993 © hadian (Gre ist PRIZE $5000 - Melissa Purvis We held our own in the third and even though both teams took numerous penalties, Bradford only counted once with 3:43 left in the game. ¥ The final buzzer sounded and a small scuffle ensued which tacked on 5 penalties for us - and 4 for Bradford before we left the'ice. Ken Johnston was voted' MVP and it was well deserved. Danny Lyons, Scott Jeffrey, and Colin Laird worked endlessly throughout ll our games. Good work boys! Port Perry's own Novice 1 hockey squad capped off a rewarding hockey season in Buffalo last weekend as they' went undefeated in 3 games at the Pepsi Invitational Tournament. A "point per period" scoring system resulted in our team-finishing third overall in the 8 team tournament despite being without our senior goaler Darcy Stephens who came along for the trip. Game one saw us matched against a team from North Hills, Pennsylvania and Thomas Lee earned a shutout in odr goal as the Auctions romped to a 4-0 win. Our team lost on the penalty tally by 6-1, but when we were at full strength we had goals by Mike Wiseman, Adam Moynes, Dean Van Camp and Dane Gray. Assists were credited to Jeff Tarbotton, Scott Duncan, Trevor Lance and Gerard Timmers 1. Our second game was a tight checking affair that some spectators felt we deserved.to win. Alas, the final score was a 185 WATER ST., PORT PERRY wvissosr 980-3281 Later that night, there was actually a lot of sighs of relief, as most parents were actually pleased that it was over. The mothers prepared for more shopping on Sunday and the fathers tried to figure out how they would get it across the border and pay for it all. We held our own vote later for MVP and it was a draw, as there were equal votes for Gary Geer and Ed Teno as "most valuable people" of the year. They were rewarded with new hats by their wives which 1-1 tie with Trenton. After a scoreless first period Trenton took a second period 1- 0 lead and were looking as if they would make it stick. Thankfully Dane came through with an unassisted tying goal after a couple of nice dekes and a shot under the crossbar. Matt Skerratt, Mike LeFort and Mike Milligan all make solid checking contributions to frustrate the Trenton attackers. Our final game was a must- win match to reach the "Final" game but though we weren't beaten in the 3-3 tie, we just weren't able to tighten up our back-checking at crucial points in the game and thus keep our Barrie competitors at bay. Once again Thomas played wll between the pipes in the match. Scoring for Port Perry was done by Matt (nice wrist shot!) from the ever hustling Trevor Weisflock; Adam Moynes on a goal-mouth scramble with assists to Mike Milligan and Gerard Timmers and also by everyone just has to see sometime. It has been a great year, the best that this group of boys have ever had, and we can honestly put the credit right where it belongs with Gary and Ed These gentlemen have worked endlessly, teaching, training and showing all the boys throughout the year and have acted as perfect role models for the boys to follow in their footsteps through the years to come. Strong finish by Novice 1 Dane (unassisted). Not to be overlooked, though their names may not be on the score sheet often, were Tom Jones and Scott Duncan who played solidly on the blue lines and helped fill their roles as the goalies second-best friends (next to the goal posts of course!). When the on-ice activities were completed for the season, a presentation was held to thank team sponsors Mr. and Mrs. John Pearce, head coach Bob Spencley and wife Anna, assistant coaches Murray Empringham and Ken Parry and the behind-the-scenes organizer Manager Allynne Jones. Mementos and thanks for a job well done were handed out to the above on behalf of the parents (several of whom seemed a little reluctant to say good-bye to their hockey season). Each player received commemorative pins and awards to climax their first taste of "international hockey."
