The program will run for six weeks (two hours each week) and it will make a difference in, your life. The Port Perry native will find adventure of a different and potentially dangerous kind over the next six months as he joins the International Pgacekeeping force in war- ravaged Somalia. He's a vehicle technician (rank of craftsman) with the Electrical Mechanical Engineers, 2nd 'Service Battalion attached to the Special Services Force based in Camp Petawawa. And on Monday morning, he * was winging his way to Mogadishu, Somalia for a six month tour of duty. He volunteered for this duty and learned about two weeks ago that he would be joining about 1000 other Canadians and soldiers from several other countries in peacekeeping efforts in the African nation. "I volunteered for 'this because of the experiefice. Sure, I guess I want a bit of adventure, too," he told the Citizen in an interview over the weekend. gia mie » - .- - = apilalll He has no illusions about the potential danger the members of the Peacekeeping Force face daily, but said he isn't worried. "I have had a lot of good training," he said with a smile. Being in the vehicle repair branch, perhaps the biggest danger he'll face is from-land mines. The warring factions in Somalia have set down thousands of the deadly mines and they don't tell people where they are placed. Posted to the Joint Forces HQ in Mogadishu, Craftsman Tripp and his EME colleagues are responsible for repairs to all vehicles from jeeps to armoured personnel carriers. No matter where they break ' down, they have to be repaired on the spot or towed into a depot for repairs. Craftsmen Tripp joined the Canadian Forces three years ago and this will be his first stint overseas. He, along with 20 other Canadians flew a civilian flight Monday morning to Nairobi, Kenya and from there will fly by military air craft to Mogadishu. Vince's parents, Harry and Chris, have mixed feelings. "I'm very pleased for him. It's great to get out and get some adventure," said Mr. Tripp. 'But he added that yes, naturally, "there are always some concerns." Incidently, Vince and.all the Canadians in Somalia would be more than pleased to receive cards or letters from people at home. You can address them to Cdn. Reg. Battle Group, CFPO 5005, Belleville, Ontario. KOK . KO. Once his six months in Somalia are over, Craftsman Tripp will be returning to the CFB at Petawawa.
