Young wrestler aiming for some lofty goals Jay Blain may be just 12 years old, but already he's set his sights on some pretty lofty goals. Some day, this determined youngster wants to wear the Canadian colours at the Olympic Games and wrestle his way to a medal But that's in the distant future. In a couple of weeks, . Jay will be going after a gold medal in the "Kids Division" at | the Eastern Canada Free Style Wrestling finals in Fergus, Ont., May 7-8 And how does he feel about his chances? "Very good," he told the Citizen last week in an interview at his home near Epsom This is not bragging or a false sense of his abilities, merely a reflection of the positive attitude necessary in all competitive athletics. And well he should be going in to a national event with this kind of attitude. Jay hasn't been defeated in a match so far this year. In fact, he hasn't had a point scored against him A week ago at the Ontario championships, he won all three matches for a gold medal, one by a pin, and the other two by a "mercy" including the final . Jay said he was a bit nervous just before the final match because his opponent was bigger and stronger. But Jay relied on his own wrestling strengths--speed, Practice knowledge and his favourite hold--the head and arm throw to get the victory. Jay who weighs in at about 42 kg was first introduced to the sport by his older brother Ben who has had a positive influence on his development. "He taught me a lot of my moves," says Jay. Likewise his coaches at the XL Wrestling Club in Whitby where he works out twice a week. He credits Andy Dymont and Bob Stewart with having a tgreat deal to do with the {success he has enjoyed so far. This is Jay's third season of competitive free-style wrestling and he has steadily improved from a silver medal in the provincials to a gold last year, and a bronze at the Nationals where he was defeated just once. His dedication to the sport means he must watch carefully what he eats (no junk food) and get plenty of rest, especially in the weeks leading up to a major competition. Some «people think of wrestling as the show they see on television each week. Free- style wrestling and the TV variety are as different as night and day. Jay's not much of a fan of the TV variety, calling it all fake and staged. He'd rather be outside shooting baskets or riding his bike than sitting in front of the TV watching "pro" wrestling. dates for Minor Softball The following are the scheduled practice times for Port Perry and District Minor Softball T- Ball ( Born 1987, 1988, 1989) May 25 at 6:00 p.m. at R.H. She drives him to practise and competitions. "I like the fact it's a very controlled sport, you rarely see anger or temper tantrums and the coaches stress sportsmanship at all times," she said. Jay is in grade six at Epsom Public School. While wrestling is a major part of his life, he doesn't neglect other things like his studies. He keeps his grades up and right now he's planning to attend university for a career as a phys ed teacher. And yes, he'd love to be a member of a university wrestling team. As for his ultimate dream of an Olympic medal, well, that's a few years down the road. But don't bet against this soft- spoken, red-headed youngster who sets goals for himself and goes after them.
