=" 30 -- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, April 27; 1993 Quilters Guild presents "Spring Patches" by Heather McCrae This weekend the Port Perry Patchers Quilters' Guild is presenting its "Spring Patches" quilt show at Port Perry United Church. Running from Friday, April 30, 10 a.m.- 8 p.m. and Saturday, May 1, from 10 -4, the show offers a large variety of quilts, quilted wall hangings, clothing and an historical quilt display. There will also be a merchant's mall and viewers choice in clothing, wall hangings and quilts. The guild has been busy over the past few months creating and finishing a beautiful quilt to be raffled off this weekend at the closing of the show Every member has had a hand in it, as each person made a square, which were then pieced together by Hildy Smith, followed by many hours of quilting bees to have it quilted. Tickets for £his beautiful work of art are $1 each and are available at Brock's Department Store, Daisy's, the Quilter's Cupboard in Uxbridge, Country Calico in Lindsay and will also be available at Artfest this weekend. The Quilters' Guild was started in 1989 by Sarah Elliott, a well known and respected quilting teacher. At the end of 1990 the guild had grown to 26 members. Susan Scholfield (left) and Barb Carnegle of the Patchers Quilters' Guild. See story above. Meeting every third Monday evening at the Emmanuel Pentecostal Church, the Guild is now flourishing with almost 50 members hailing from Port Perry, Uxbridge, Janetville, Sunderland, Blackstock and Oshawa. Sarah was the first president and has been a big influence on this group of talented women. There's a good cross-section in the guild. Some women have been quilting for many years while others have hardly ever sewn, yet they "all share the same interest of quilting, learning and helping each other" says Mrs. Carnegie. Greta Hambleton, a member from Sunderland, presented a challenge to the guild last fall. Each participating member was given two pieces of fabric and it was left up to them to Buy Sell Swap Rent Citizen want ads 36 Water St. Port Perry design and quilt a wall hanging using six other pieces of fabric of their colour and texture choice. These challenge entries were judged last week by our own 4Bent Farndale, a well known" {local art promoter and Bonnie Craw of the York Heritage Quilters Guild in Markham. "The work was absolutely remarkable on each piece" remarked Mrs. Farndale. Dividing the entries into two categories, namely 'creativity' and 'workmanship', the winners were Barb Cartan in the creative department and Angie Andfruss in the workmanship division. An event the guild has competed in over the past two years is the Country Quilt Fest in Milton, held August 6-15, and organized by the Ontario Agricultural Museum and the Hobby Horse Quilt Shop in Georgetown. Quilting guilds from all over the province are invited to 'enter, and in the past two members from the Port Perry Patchers have won in the quilted clothing division. Sarah won last year with her jacket and Barbara won the year before with a quilted two piece suit. The guild is competing again this year, entering a pyramid log cabin jacket, created by Victoria Fletcher, a bargello wall hanging by Getra Sutton and Barb Cartan's challenge winner. Two beautiful quilts, produced by Vicki Fletcher (snowflake design) and Barbara Carnegie (Double Wedding Ring creation) are also being entered in the popular Milton shaw.
