Virginia Clarke, manager of the Marlin Travel office in Port Perry said the official announcement was made Monday afternoon, but the merger will take place over the next two years. "This is excellent news for our customers who will now have the additional benefits of doing business with the world's leading travel company," said Ms. Clarke. Some of the changes that clients will notice at the Port Perry office include the sale of Thomas Cook Travellers Travel joins Thomas Cook cheques, and the ability to offer the peace of mind of world wide travel and emergency assistance in the offices in 120 countries, she added. Over the last 26 years, Marlin Travel has become the largest independent agency in Canada with over 265 branches. Thomas Cook wished to expand the size of its network in Canada to increase market share. The combination of Thomas Cook and Marlin Travel is a , perfect strategic fit for both companies. The name Marlin Travel will be gradually converted to Thomas Cook over the next couple of years. A statement Monday said in terms of jobs, "it is inevitable that some roles will change and may disappear as the new company evolves, however, they will be minimal." Teachers accept new pact The Durham Board of Education has approved a new contract that will give secondary teachers a pay increase of 0.3 per cent this year. The agreement, reached in April, is retroactive to last September and will expire on August 31 this year. Qualified teachers will now $64,538, and a principal could earn as much as $86,776. Starting on July 1, the hourly rate for continuing education and home instruction teachers will go up by the same 0.3 per cent to $29.41 per hour.
