wp 26-- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday , May 4, 1993 New show at Farndale Gallery Beverley and Paul Williams are returning to the Kent Farndale Gallery at the Scugog Memorial Public Library to the great pleasure of their many local fans. Their new show is entitled Legends in Leather and runs from May 8 to 28. You are invited to take tea with the artists between 1 and 4 pm. on Saturday, May 8 at the library. Beverley, a talented fibre artist and Paul, an award-winning sculptor in leather share a studio in an old general store in Bethany, Ontario. For over fourteen years they have worked together creating exciting sculptures and hand woven wall hangings for private homes and offices or public areas. Paul uses an ancient mediaeval technique, "Cuir Bouilli". to create his three dimensional pieces. Wet leather is stretched over handmade forms, then baked in an oven till stiff. Greaf care must be taken at this point as too much moisture or heat can ruin the piece. With an air brush, Paul applies special dyes before handpainting acrylics to emphasize the flowing lines in each form. Paul says, "My imagery comes from combining landscapes with the human face. This imparts an eerie and mystical quality as the ., face disappears or becomes distorted by flowing lines. In this way I bring back life to this sensuous material.
