Beugog Ciflzey -- Tuesday; Moy T1008 --3 Police want change in Triathlon Route Negotiations between the Canoe the Nonquon Committee and Durham Police have resulted in a new route for the popular triathlon which will be held this year on Sunday, June 6, at 10 in the morning. Durham Police had expressed strong concerns about the safety of competitors in the cycling and running parts of the Triathlon which has been staged the last two years on the same Saturday as Canoe the Nonquon. *Durham Police told the committee that a route change is necessary or the event would have to be cancelled. Nong Committee Marilyn Pearce said last week the negotiations with the Police resulted in a new proposed route for the cycle/running part of the Triathlon. * The route would start at the Port Perry lakefront, go west ber The grades 4, 5 and 6 students at Greenbank Public School entertained their friends and parents last week with the play "On Broadway." Competitors will be required to cycle this route twice. Mrs. Pearce said that by using this" route, only 29 homes will be directly affected. And. 3s well there are alternative exits and escape routes for|people living in Castle Harbour, Kent Estates and Cawker's Creek. The committee must now get the consent of Durham Region Lethal Brew A thief broke into a Whitby home and stolefl a bottle of Vodka which had deadly chemicals in it. On April 16 a break and enter occurred at a home located on Fernway Crescent between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. Numerous bottles of liquor had been taken from the home, anddt was later discovered that ong Volstoi plastic 'Vodka bottle contained Bromine, a hot tub chemical similar to Chlorine. Durham Police officiald said the Vodka bottle is red in colour, and the liquid is clear. The contents could also be dangerous if 4 consumed. Police are warhing anyone who may find this bottle not to comsume the contents. They are also asking anyone who may have any information on this break and énter fo call Durham Regional Police at 579- 1520 or Crime Stoppers at 436- 8477. and Scugog Township for permission to close the roads for the event. And the Committee will also be notifying residents who live directly on the route to ask for their co-operation. The Nonquon Triathlon attracted more than 100 competitors last year, many from outside the Township. But there havé®been serious.concerns raised over 'the safety of competitors and the public. Last year, a cyclist suffered minor injuriés when struck by a vehicle on the course. The committee hopes that by moving the event from the busy Saturday to Shinday morning at 10:00, there will be less traffic and congestion, thus making it safer for all concerned during the event which lasts gbout two hours. Mrs. Pearce said Commfttee members dre confident: the community will co-operate fully so that this popular Triathlon can continue. It has become an important part of the Canoe the Nonquon weekend which is a major fund- raising venture for the Scugog Shores Museum. The Triathlon this year is expected to raise about $2,000.
