Millar fined Peter Bell $90,000 and his cdmpany Avion Yacht Sales $6,720 in Ontario court at Whitby May 3. Bell, 47, pleaded guilty to charges of*wiffully evading payment of retail sales tax in the' amounteof $96,720. ed Ministry of Finance prosecutor John Fagan told the court that the tax in question was collected by the corfipany on the sale of boats from July 1989 to December 1991, and that the company"sesales tax records were falsified to conceal the actual amounts collected. Bell told the court that Avion sold custom-built boats ranging in price from $75,000 to $400,000. He admitted ir court that the company had collected the tax , but claimed he did not intend to keep the money for himself. He said his business was under a great deal of pressure and he had not reported the tax because he was not able to turn it over to the government.
