Gamblers start with win, loss The Greenbank Gamblers opened the 1993 fastball season this past week on two chilly evenings in Stouffville and Greenbank and came out with a win and a loss in two close games. Tuesday night in Stouffville, Jim Chilvers started on the mound for Greenbank and in the two innings he pitched, he struck out 5 batters but surrendered a Home Run to Byron Baranieski. To offset the Stouffville homer, Chilvers connected for a Home Run of his own to knot the score at 1-1. Mark Goreski took over the pitching duties for the Gamblers and held Stouffville to a single run in the sixth inning, while his teammates collected a pair of runs and take home a close 3-2 win. Greenbank scored two runs when Peter Oosterholt led off with a single and scored on Terry Till's three bagger. Till himself scored on an infield hit by Brian Till. Other Gambler hits went to Mike Giroux, Trevor Till and Bill Buys. Goreski struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the Greenbank win. ' The next night in Greenbank Park, Mark Goreski faced the Oshawa Juniors and this time Jason Swift and Phil Yahn teamed up to stop the Gamblers by a 5-3 score. The Gambler hits went to Mike Giroux, Bill Buys, Jim Chilvers, Mark Goreski and 'Terry Till but Greenbank stranded nine baserunners during the game which proved to be their downfall. Jason Rideout and Hubert Bassillio led the Oshawa attack with two hits each while Dave Bacon and Terry Till made fine outfield catches for Greenbank. This week has the Gamblers in Port Perry for a meeting with the Eagles on Tuesday night and Oshawa O'Toole's visit Greenbank Park for a tussle with the Gamblers at 8:00 p.m. Angels bounced 10-2 in opener The Scugog "Angels" opened there 1993 season, with Mayor Howard Hall, along with two players off the Special Olympic team tossing out the first ball. The Angels then got the game underway with Oshawa Double "B's" providing the opposition. The Double "B's" jumped off to an early 2-0 lead and were never in any trouble. The Angels got one back in their half of the first inning, a walk to Joyce Parkinson, who then advanced on a passed ball before being driven home on a Jackie Dempster double. Then in the second, Oshawa -had six hits including a home run, to score four runs. Then in the fourth on a walk, and three hits the Double "B's" were able to add three more runs. This all came before the Angels were able to score their second run of the game on a Gena Spence triple, then Kim Stewart's single to score Spefice. Oshawa added once more in the sixth on two hits and a passed ball. The Angels were not able to solve the pitching of the Double "B's" For the "Angels," Tracy Smith had a single while Kim Stewart had two. Nancy McConnell and Geng Spence had triples in a losing cause 10-2. The Angels do not play next Sunday because of the long holiday weekend, but should be back in action again the following Sunday at 8:30 p.m.. my Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, May 15,1993 --33 4% NEW VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH : Air, 3.8 Litre V6, 7 Pass.
