The estate ag and brok Restoration of one of Scugog's finest old buildings will get underway in June and should »e complete by the end of eptember. The Head Memorial United Church on Scugog Island will get a badly needed new roof and repairs to the foundation. Scugog Historical Society president Paul Arculus said a federal jobs creation grant for $48,000 was confirmed last week, and this money willgbe used to hire six people to work on the construction for a period of 16 weeks. The Society is now in process of hiring the six w' must be currently drawing unemployfiient ipsurance to qualify. Once hired, they will work under the direction of architect Gary Moore who is supervising the restoration project for the Society. The Head Church, as. it known, is now part of the Scugog Shores Mugeum Complex at the south end of the Scugog Island. The church was built in 1860, with a front porch added in 1905 and the "tea room" about ten years later. In 1969, the church ceased to be a place of worship and was turnefl over to the Museum. But last summer, roof shingles began to come loose, the tea room was separatjmg from the main building andthe floor developed a distinctive warp indicating that the outside wall foundation was crumbling. The" Historical Society contacted the Advisory Board 0) the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario who appointed noted architect Phillip Carter to survey the Church and make recommendations. In his report, he stressed the urgency of shingling the roof, replacing support beams," levelling the floor, painting the exterior and putting in a new" foundation. Here's what Mr. Carter had to say about the church. "This delightful building is an excellent example of vernacular rural church architecture inf Ontario. It is a good example of early Upper Canada rural ecclesiastical architecture and worthy of restoration and preservation." The total cost of the restoration project will be in excess of $60,000. The Historical Society is now in the middle of a fund-raising campaign for $19,000 as its share of the project cost. Mr. Arculus said last week donations have been coming in nicely this month. Proceeds from this year's Canoe the Nonquon/Triathlon and special "Last Paddle" will be used for the restoration. Individuals and _ groups wishing to make a donation can contact 98523589.
