Let us first describe the term "whine," here are just a couple of definitions from the Oxford American Dictionary: "to make a long, high complaining cry Scouts say thanks e Editor: I would like to thank all the residents, busiriesses, service clubs, Scugog Citizen, Port Perry Star, leaders, parents and boys for making our scouting year fun and successful. It is not whining, but rather the average persan (silent majority) finally speaking out Silent majority must continue to be critical 'We have a government (NDP) telling us that we must fight the deficit and to do this taxes must increase while government spending is increasing by only 0.3 per cent. I do, however, deal with average people every day and their anger is fairly consistent with mine. Many experts (other than those hired by the NDP» objected to this move and added that once the deficit reached those heights it would be very difficult to bring back down. Well, the NDP's ridiculous plan to spend Ontario out of the recession Great banquet To the Editor: Ah open letter to Port Perry Minor Hockey Association Executives. Yes, everyone, myself included, agrees that the defigit must be brought under control. But tax increases are not the answer. Think about it, Mr. Editor. If your paper finds that overhead, staff, and all other costs to turn out a newspaper are increasing and your profit margin is falling, what do you do? Well, I guess you could charge for the paper, but suddenly distribution drops and advertisers (your main source of income) become 'concerned.' Or you could charge more for ads, but speaking fe one of your customer, -- ig) you had best provide added service or something if you want to charge more. I can't speak for you, but my only options when I wish to increase my profit margin is to either improve service or to make my own operations more efficient. I could go into great detail as to why raising taxes without reduced spending worr't solve a thing, but space is limited. Simply put, there is only so much to go around and the majority of taxes are paid by the middle class. With only so much money coming in (wage hikes at zero per cent or lowered even) the cost of living remaining constant and taxes now going up again, what do you think will happen? People will live with less which means less groceries, . new cars, renovations, luxury items, etc. I don't think I have to spell out this vicious circle that is happening here. There is no way the government can reach its projected reduction by taxing more. People will simply make do with less, as you say, and the tax revenues will continue to go down, Politicians have sung this song before--we must pay our fair share--but taxes keep going up and so doef the deficit. Ce The problem is not that we have failed to pay the piper (by the way, where have you been h Turn to page 12 1st PORT PERRY Registration ® Beavers ® Cubs" ® Scouts @ Venturers * MON., JUNE 7th 6:00 to 7:00 PM CHURCH OF THE ASCENSION «John &'North St. « New leaders always welcome.
