imi should be acknowledged To the Editor: vg letter to Mayor Howard po Wednesday, May 19, I was one of the ten Marsh Hill residents to receive an award from the Wetland Habitat Agreement Natural Area Stewardship Program as landowners who have pledged "to protect Beaver River Wetlands on our properties. The Awards to. Brock Township recipients were d by Brock C il Reg Starr. You, sir, were scheduled to make the presentation to the Scugog recipients but you chose to leave the reception prior to the peesentations. As a result of 'your absence the Brock Township . Councilor was, required to make the Awards Rian t Mayor of Scugog you are all citizens ih Ai Township. Your dereliction of duty was noted by all those present at the Sunderland reception. Is your Operating Engineers' heavy construction equipment training institute in their community, making _ it impossible for you to carry out your duties as Mayor? Are you unable to take part in an Award presentation, honouring Marsh Hill résidents for their personal efforts to_protect and preserve Wetlands, because you persist in describing these residents as NIMBYS pretending fo be personal ity to the residents of Marsh Hill, who are jopposing the proposed Continue to. be From page ten living for thé last eight years) it is how the governments have been spending the revenues they receive. Government has to come up with some creative, radical methods to reduce the deficit without constantly raising, taxes. If anybody can explain to me how this most recent budget will solve our deficit problems, then I'm all ears. | for the rest of the editorial, I have a few ts. The tant comparison to Canada and other countries is getting monotonous. Yes, Canada is a great place to live and the only place I would want to live. I have been to countries that don't have the standard of living we have, but they don't have the resources (natural, technical, educational, ete) th we have. I'm sorry places like the former Soviet Union, Ypoievie and those in Africa haVe great hardships, But I'm really tired of people trying to make me feél guilty for living here and not there. I'm sure I'd feel differently if I lived elsewhere, but I don't. 1 see what this country has to offer and it ticks me off to no end to see inept and greedy, politicians ruin it by trying to please everyone (mainly special interest groups, but that's another story) so they can get re-elected. Do I sound cynical? You' re damn right I am. But I'm taking the next sfep and attempting to do something about it. The people running WALTER ¢ CAMPBELL "i paints i PORT PERRY HOME What other reason would cause you to miss a photo critical this country are not doing the job. I am not going to stop whining and just accept it. Mr. Editor, you can just go to work tomorrow morning and be thankful, if you wish, but "Fm not satisfied with that. Canadians have to stop judging themselves by other areas of the globe. We should be more critical and speak out to let the politicians know how we feel. I expect more from the people who are running or wish to run this provines/country and I will keep whining until they get thely message. Hopefully, the many people who have confirmed with me privately what I have just written, Will also speak out. Mr. Hall you. should open your mind and accept the fact that the Natural Heritage League and the Ontario Gover t have d us as landowners who care about the environment. Are we expecting too much to have our own Mayor acknowledge our t? Bob Haick, Marsh Hill Severance pay for ousted politicians? To the Editor: The Durham Regional Council has approved a Severance package for themselves. Vote them out and they get paidifor it. With a faltering economy, a drastic eduction iin transfer payments from the Provincial Government and a shrinking tax base due to the struggling business sector, one would hope that the council would be more considerate. With the threat of lay-offs and the need for all sectors of the economy to (as a minimum) maintain the present price and wage structure, to feather their nest with badly needed tax dollars is unacceptable. - What' 5 to ag' Bi them from this misuse of Public Funds is unacceptable.
