by John B. McClelland Port Perry Minor Softball has lined up some exciting events this summer that should be of great intérest to fastball fans. Port Perry will be hosting two all- Ontario tournaments in August, and think this is the first time the community has landed two such tournaments in one. summer. On August 21-22, the Midget tournament will be held at the lakeshore diamonds 'with the powerful Port Perry Merchants acting as host squad. This should be a dandy event as it will bring the top eight Midget squads together for the provincial championship. Merchants are the defending champs in this divisi and they have an excellent team this year as well. ) Then, a week later, (Aug. 28-29) the all- Ontario Squirt tournament will go in Port Perry. And again, the local Squirt team will compete as the host team. This will be a great chance to. see these young " players compete as they are the future of fastball in this community and indeed the province. Also, you may want to circle July 14 on the calendar right now as two of the best fastball teams anywhere will be $laying an exhibition double header in Port Perry that everiing. The Oshawa Hornets, led by their ace pitchers Brad Baker and Chris Wilson will be playing the Soos from Sieur City, Towa. The Hornets, formerly the Merchants, won the International Softball Congress (ISC) tournament near Ottawa last year and will be in the ISC world event this August in Wisconsin. They are calling the July 14 double header in i the "Canada-US challenge." The Soos are fast year's Iowa State champions and over the past two years have put together a record of 161 wins and 55 losses. On the mound, they have Michael Gaiger, a 6' 3" 220 pounder from New Zealand where fastball is a nati sport. The games between the Hornets and the Soos will be on the North Diamond and Water Street will be blocked off to allow for spectator bleachers. These may be just exhibition games but both these teams mean business. They will put on a great show for the fans; this will be world clags-¢alibre fastball. Port Perry Minor Softball president Dave Kay and past president Wayne * Venning made the details public at a press conference last week at Pineridge Sports Store in Port Perry. They are very excited about the prospect of the Hornets and the Soos here in July 14. Any youngster from Minor Softball wearing a team jersey will get in free. Tickets will Be sold for thé rest of the spectators at $3 each or $5 for a family. And there will be a beer garden. Minor Softball is sharing in the net proceeds from these two exhibition games. They are hoping for an excellent turn-out of fans who enjoy fastball and want the chance to see two top teams. That's July 14 with the first game starting at 7:30 PM. Still with minor sports, it was nice to see Gary Geer receive a coveted Life Membership from Port Perry Minor Hockey at the recent awards banquet. Gary has coached the local Pee Wee Legion team for many years and began coaching in the minor system in Port Perry back in 1966. Minor Hockey doesn't hand out Life Memberships to many people (there are only about 15 who have been hono! this way) so this is an re tonat Ho the organization feels about the contribution Gary hag. made over the years. A secundeapiesial presentation was ate at the awards banquet to Doug Scott who is "retiring" this, year. Doug has been a coach and ofi the executive for two decades, won several . He was a regular presen around the arena and was often referred our township we are very much in to as Mr. Hockey in this Severdl players he has over the hed agr t with Mayor Hall and those bers of council who have had to put years showed up at the banquet to see Doug get his award, an indication of the impact he had on so many young players. I mention these two special presentations because they were made at the end of the awards ceremonies and by that time a lot of people had left the arena. This was unfortunate because these are important awards and should be recognized. Perhaps next year, if Minor Hockey is handing out individual awards like this, they will be made before all the player awards. Anyway, I'd like to add my own personal congratulations to Gary and Doug. Over the years, I have watched their teams in action many times when they were behind the bench. They are deserving of the awards and the recognition they receive. HSlary, by the way, said he'll be back behind the bench with the Legionaires this fall, A lot of people, myself included, are hoping that Doug's retirement is just a "holiday," and he too will return to active duty with Port Perry Minor Hockey in the future. up with a tremendous amount of verbal abuse from the ratepayers group who call themselves SCOPE just because the majority of-council is supporting the construction of a training centre on the 12th line. Good for council! It will be good for our township. SCOPE can tell their story anyway they want to but they'll never convince us that once their smoke and mirrors strategy is objectively scrutinized they are in reality opposed to the equipment training centre solely because it is being proposed in their backyard. As usual the poor old environment maker. Holly Patton and Michele Ferland for doing a great job painting all the childrens' faces. Janice Patton, Vicky Watson, Kelly Evans., Laurie Bray, Bonnie Dunkerley and all other toy library members who helped make our picnic a great success, A great time was had by all the 59 children and families that attended under warm sunny skies. The children thoroughly enjoyed the wagon rides, pony rides and seeing all the animals at the farm. As I end my term as chairperson for special events for the Toy Library and start my term as co-director, I would also like to thank the Port Perry United Church for their sponsorship of the Scugog Toy Lending Library. This allowed our Scout group to raise over $900 for the year end camp. We would also like to thank everyone who bought tickets and those who support the Scout movement. The draw was held recently at gets used again as a Pp boy. It's too bad negativity has overtaken Marsh Hill.
