GM adds third shift for truck production * General Motors will be adding a third shift to the Truck Assembly Centre in Oshawa this coming August. "The third shift is being added to meet ever-growing demand for top quality full-size extended cab Chev and GMC pick-up trucks and will create 650 new jobs at the GM said company president George Peapples last week. It will be the first assembly operation in North America to operate on a full third shift. "This is a real demonstration of the flexibility of GM to respond to increased market demand through better utilization of existing facilities," he added. Local Lions Club working for eye-bank on 'rush' basis "Close your eyes for 15 seconds." When Fenna Gjaltema of the Emergency Departmegi of our local Hospital was guest speaker at the Lions Club on May 17, she asked each Lion to close his eyes for 15 seconds so that he could partially sense the reality of being visually impaired or blind. Port Perry Hospital is one of the leading sources in the Province for eye donors. From the eye it is primarily thé cornea which is used. If a person's cornea is damaged blindness often occurs. Sight can be restored with a simple operation to replace the cornea. Corneal grafts are the most successful kind of implants with an 85 per cent success rate. Anyone can be an eye donor. It isn't necessary to match age, sex, eye colour, or to have perfect vision because the cornea is only a clear layer of tissue which covers the front of the eye. If you decide to give the gift of sight a donor card should be completed and attached to your licence. Donor cards are available at the hospital or through your doctor. ' Lions Clubs all over the world have helped the blind ever since Helen Keller was the Guest Speaker at the Lions International Convention in 1919. Lions, as the largest Service Club in the world, have helped with eyesight in the following ways: 1. Provided Vitamin A "shots" to help prevent blindness in under developed countries. 2. Recycled eye glasses for poorer countries. 3. Operated - mobile "Cataract Planes" for surgery on needy patients in South America. 4. Set up "Guide Dog Schools" to train 'Guide Dogs. for the blind. 5. Built and donated the C.N.I.LB. Camp at Lake Joseph for the blind. It is now run by G.N.LB. 6. Supported programs to control Diabetes because it is a leading cause of blindness. 7. Operates, on a world wide basis, a "Sight First" campaign to raise funds and alert people' everywhere on the importance of eye care. One of the main problems locally is to' get the donated eye to the eye bank in Toronto quickly. The cornea must be transplanted within 48 hours. The eye bank is always empty because the available corneal tissue is only enough for a fraction of the pepple who need it. The Port Perry Lions Cluh has agreed to become the transportation agent to get the locally donated eyes to the eye bank on a "Rush" basis. Chairmen for this Transportation Service are Lions David Moody and Harry Sissons. RON LEE WATER SUPPLY Cisterns ® Wells ® Pools . The ratification sent a strong signal that workers in Oshawa are determined to earn the right for new jobs and future production opportunities. Two other truck plants, both in the United States, were attempting Yo secure the pr Nocated to Oshawa. Recognizing the importance of 650 new high-paying jobs in Oshawa, the Ontario government will be paying $! " million to assist in up-grading the skills of the new workers in the truck plant. GM Canada has reported strong sales of trucks so far this year. In May, the company delivered 14,298 new trucks in Canada, a 14 per cent increase over May last year. And so far in this model year which began last October 1, GM has sold 90,879 new trucks, a 12 per cent increase over the 81,1563 sold during the same period in the previous model year.
