Election not a beauty pageant, says Liberal To The Editor: In various interviews subsequent to the conservative leadership race Mr. Stevenson, the current conservative member from Durham, made the following remarks regarding the leadership of Jean Chretien. "The public wants a new face, not a retread like Jean Chretien." I would like to point out that 'Mr. Chretien has over 16 years of cabinet experience, having held every major post except Prime Minister. He came from a working class, large family and made his way by his own efforts and drive. He hasvnever had a scandal associated with him. He is a federalist in Quebec at a time when this is popular, but he to fight for Canada. His mentors are people with the stature of Lester Perason, Pierre Trudeau and John Turner. In addition he is a team player which is one reason wh¥ I am pleased to.represent the party -here in Durham Since when has it become popular to criticize experience and competence in government? 4 specializing in custom design & repair \\ 238 Queen St, (rm 101) | \ PORT PERRY / 985-2953 \ / The electorate does not want an "A New Face" they want a new government. It is hoped that we can keep this campaign on the high plain of issues rather then personalities. The issue is the abysmal mishandling of the economy and its resultant suffering and despair by the people of our country.During the coming months many candidates will use vary tactics in their attempts to garner the public vote. The liberal tactic will be to address the concerns and needs of the people whom we hope to represent in Ottawa. We are not out to win a beauty pageant. We are out to try our best to turn this country around by facing the issues head on and finding lasting solutions forthe benefit of ALL Canadians.
