Later, quietly sitting in his locker at Tiger Stadium, almost incredulous at the crowd of reporters gathered in front of him, gentle John came as close as he ever does to . "I wanted to ask him (umpire Rich Garcia) about that pitch, but | didn't get the chance." then he quickly turned to self-criticism. *I guess that pitch was just 100 close to take." "No headlines there folks! * John Olerud s just too nice to be the goat, too mild-mannered to blame anyone else for a screw-up, and too good at the plate to let it happen again. Around baseball, scouts, managers and peers know that Olerud has been the most proficient hitter in the majors for the first two months of the season. In the stands, people are just getting to know him. After the first tabulation of all-star ballots, John ranked seventh. He didn't get mad about that, either. But there isn't a better first baseman anywhere right now, let alone six. He may not be voted 10 the All-Star team but he'll be op it and then, he'll be recognized and be asked to do more interviews and he'll still wonder what the fuss is about. Olerud has a love for life that few can appreciate. In January of 1989, he had a brushback more fearful than anything Jack McDowell can throw inside. He survived surgery on an aneurysm at the base of his brain and was'still in the major leagues within a year. No wonder he treats every event as a bonus. re's a remote chance Olerud can become the first since Ted ims in 1941 to hit .400. But consider how hot he's been already and he's not hitting .400. Now he'll have to get even hotter and sustain the pace for four months. Hitting .300 is a major lish A .350 ge is spectacular and 400 is saved for a special few, John Olerud might be one of them but you'll have to sed it first-hand, 'cause he'll never tell you about it. Space doesn't allow for a full reporting on all gags, but here are some high pdints of the day: Subby's won a game! Despite bad luck so far this season Subby's played tough games by just one goal. But in the third game against the highly rated (and previously * undefeated)! Haugen's Heroes pulled out all the stops and won their first game of the season. Both Darlene Colton Photography and Reach Park Motors won all three of their contests, and looking foward to a rematch in regular season play. The good news for Tim's Renovations is that they Hol hatoarach ge all day, but in an exciting match against the strogg Haugen's Heroes, Evan Powell managed a personal victory -- he scored his first goal ever after trying for three years! The Lions Club also tasted victory for the first time in a match against Lake Scugog Lumber. Not to be outdone, Lake Scugog Lumber picked up their first tie in a match with Brian's Towing, and then their first win against their nemesis frpm Wednesday night, Twice d Tales. Thank to all concerned for persevering through the wet weather,
