10 -- Se => Senators out of touch with reality To the Editor: Comments like "needing the money" to make ends meet show just how out of touch members of the Senate are with Canadian working people. It also illustrates that the need to abolish the Senate is greater than ever before. Furthermore, one senator had the audacity to say'that the $6,000 annual hike in living expenses (tax free) was necessary to bring parity with the House of Commons. Although MPs are over- compensated for their work (i.e, generous pension plans) at least they are elected by the people, unlike the political hacks who are appointed to the Senate. At a time when there is an estimated 1.6 million Canadians unemployed and 4.2 million living in poverty, it is appalling that an individual who works an average 100 days per year would have an income and pergs of $80,000 per year. Try explaining that you need this money to make ends meet to a family struggling to stay a- float on less than one-third that amount. It is just as outrageous that 26 had the nerve to vote in favour of the increase, eight » 1. didn't ini even wikey " show up for the vote. They must have thought it was not that important. Yet, earlier in the day, many of them had been on hand to vote for the North American Free Trade Ag t which it is clear they are dn this only because of the public backlash. If they really believed that this raise is wrong, they would have voted no in the first place. Better yet, they would not even have will continue to wreck havoc on Canada's already devastated economy. In the meantime, new Tory Prime Minister Kim/Campbell and Liberdl leader Jean Chretien are preaching restraint. Let's not forget that Brian Mulroney appointed another 15 Tories to the Senate in his last weeks in office. If the Liberals 'and Tories are serious about _, practising what they preach, it "would have taken just three additional votes (out 'of the 45 who didn't show up that day) to defeat the increase. Even if they do recall the Senate and reverse the rd plated it. It is time to eliminate the Senate. This latest move shows just how much contempt appointed senators have for average Canadians and how clearly out of touch they are with reality. . Maybe it is time they learned what it is like to find a real job when hundreds of thousands are out of work, or to line up at a food bank when they can't support their families.
