Squirts win it all! Beautiful weather, fine pitching, clutch hitting, and some excellent defense can make for a championship weekend in a fastball tournament, and that's what was presented in the city of Stratford this week as the Port Perry Legion Squirts emerged victorious over some very stiff competition. This tour consisted of 12 teams split into 3 divisions with round robin play slated for Saturday and ghe playoff rounds on To get to the final the squad had to play 3 games a day for a total of 6 all in that searing heat and humidity. Chris Jones started on rubber going 4 innings on 7 Ks and 1 hit. Mark did a nice relief job with 4 Ks and 2 hooked up all dem and over 37 innings allowed only 15 hits, while striking out 57. Sarnia made 2 throwing errors on bunts by Ryan McQuade and Mike MacLennan which allowed both runners to advance to home and third respectively. On the defensive side Sean Jeffrey gunned dows a runner at third all the way from right field. The final in this one was 7-2. Game 2 Saturday gave the boys a little rest as they mercied Seaforth 12-1 in 6 innings. The hot bat here was Michael Versage as he went 3 for 4 with 2 singles and a double. The final game of the day saw the team hook up. against another 'C' division centre as ' SPORT SHORTS they faced St. Mary's. This team had a strapping pitcher who towered over more than half of the Port squad but our guys prevailed as he was forced to throw 3 inning work in the first alone as Lycett, Richardson, and McQuade all fought off good pitches before we earned 2 runs on a walk to Mark and a home run by Ryan. Chris Monsma laid down a perfect but in the second to earn himself a hit and was later knocked in on Aaron's triple. This ended at 9-0 for the local boys behind the complete game effort by Jones and gave them their division title. In Sunday's playoff rounds the « Legionnaires started off with Elmira and through the first couple of innings this looked like a real dogfight as Port held on to 21.0 lead. This run was fashioned on a double by Ashton who promptly stole third and scored on & but attempt by Monsma. The flood gates opened up in the third for Port as they sent 11 men to the plate that inning scoring 7. Again the mercy rule was applied as Port came out on top in 5 by a 10-0 score. This also wouldn't have happened had it not been for some excellent work on the defense. Both Sean and Reid made some great catches in the outfield and Darryl and Aaron hooked up together for a catcHer to second tag out, In the semi-final, Port saw other team who has a chance to make it to the 'C' division OASAs from New Hamburg. In the final of the day Port played the host Stratford team who had defeated Bramalea in their semi-final so the local boys knew they were in tough. Due to an untimely error, one of only 10 throughout the whole weekend, Stratford pulled ahead by one at the top of the first. Port battled back to even it in the second as McQuade drew a walk, and then did what this team did so well all weekend, he stole a base, as advanced on a ground out and eame home on the delayed steal.
