In A Park Somewhere By tis Hughwon, Snoitmmr Sports Network It was a thought too wild to be true but too irresistible to pass up. Early in the spring it looked like the year we would watch a Toronto- Montreal Stanley Cup final and then, five months later, settle in to see the same two cities meet in the World Series. But a funny thing happened on the way to Utopia. The Leafs were within three minutes of the final, then tripped up and the Los Angeles Kings met Montreal. Now, the Expos are a mile back of Philadelphia in a division they must win to get a trip to the tilt Toronto's likely to be in again. Would it be all right to settle for both trophies in a Canadian cabinet for '93? As the second half of the baseball season begins it's apparent the Expos' championship plight is considerably different from their American League brethren in Toronto. The Expos have not been playing poorly, but they haven't played "lights out," and they will have to from now on. Even if the Phillies stumble and play .500 ball the rest of the way, Montreal would have to win 26 more games than it loses to overtake them. And they also have to worry about the Cardinals as well. The mission is not impossible, but improbable unless they can find two more starters like Dennis Martinez. And if they don't come from" within, they are lot likely to come from outside. The Expos don't have the budget to-go after help like the Jays do, annually scooping high priced help like David Cone of Bud Black. Montreal's hope is a phenomenal Philly fold. John Kruk, alone, will probably prevent that from happening. The Blue Jays, while not home and cooled out, are comparatively comfortable halfway through their run to repeat. They slogged through the early part of the season waiting for a couple of starters to wake up and now that they have, Toronto is the class of the American League. Their top five hitters might even give Bob Gibson nightmares and their pitching is at least adequate and could better at Pat Gillick's annual mid-summer swap meet. If his team needs pitching, he'll go out and get it. Maybe even from Montreal (Martinez) if the Expos fall too far out of the race. Then again, maybe Gillick will look for outfield help and rent Ricky Henderson for a couple of months. The Blue Jays and Expos are not too far apart by pavement, but they are $30 million apart by payroll and that difference always shows when it's time to go looking for pieces to complete a championship jig-saw puzzle. So, the all-Canadian series is a long shot again in '93 but next year with more teams in the baseball playoffs.........7 Don't laugh. Remember how long we all laughed at the Leafs. Moase CA, Ives Antiques, and Galley Fish and Seafood. After the disappointment of the Elimination Games, the Port Perry Midget Merchants returned to league play with two excellent games this week. On Tuesday, the Merchants played O'Tooles, the top team in the Oshawa Men's League. This game was an exciting pitching duel between Smith of the Merchants and Crummy of O'Tooles, with superb defence from both sides. Especially noted was.a diving catch at second by Vander Slagt. With Port behind 2-1 going into the seventh, Smith aided his own cause by hitting triple and allowing Laird to cross the plate and tie the score. Unfortunately, in the eighth, O'Tooles were able to bring in a run and won the game 3-2 in overtime. On Thursday night, the Midget Merchants visited the mosquito infested Bowmanville diamond where the fans were treated to an amazing Sicplay of aerobics from the outfield as they decided whether to field the ball or swat the mosquitoes. At the end of seven innings, the game was tied forcing overtime once again. McBride started with a double and was driven home on a single by Cochrane allowing Port to take a 3-2 lead. The Merchants were able ta hold off Bowmanville and wis the game. The play of the gante was a McBride throw frgm centre field to Kay, the catcher, who blocked the plate perfectly and tagged out the go-ahead run at home. Card had a strong pitching game, striking out eleven, walking only two, allowing five hits and two earned runs. Hitters for the week: Card - 3 singles, triple, RBI; Cochrane - RBI; Empringham - single, RBI; Laird - 2 singles, triple, RBI; Linton - single; McBride - 3 singles, double; Smart - 2 walks; Smith - 2 singles, triple, RBI; Vander Slagt - single Coming games: Tuesday July 13 - Stouffville vs Merchants at 8:30; Thursday, July 15 Merchants vs Oshawa BB at 8:45; Saturday, July 17 - Guelph Midget Tournament lish sh the game times yet to be Forder girls kick to win two games Dana Forder Under 17 girls soccer team played two games the week of July 6. Raiders ,| take it 15-14 This weeks game between Port Perry X Raiders and Settlement House Shops was an exciting one to say the least. Although the final score was 15-14 in favour of the Raiders, Settlement Shops did not give up easily. A great deal of credit has to be given to this weeks pitching staff consisting of Tanya and Pamela. Two H.R. from Lauren's bat and one from Smarty made the game that. much closer for Settlement A well executed play from Erin (left field) to Lauren (third base) to Kristy (catcher) had the fans on their feet for the out at home.
