Delegates to the AMO convention in Toronto last week overwhelmingly endorsed this stand through a reson that will be sent to the Premier's office. The 47,000 member Ontario Ag and Horse Racing Coalition (OAHRC) which includes eight horse racing associations, calls the AMO support a major victory in its campaign to curtail casino initiatives that would have a devastating impact on Ontario's horse racing industry. "Ontario farmers make $350 million per year in sales of hay, straw and grains to the horse racing industry," Ontario Ag Federation president Roger George told delegates at the AMO convention last week. This is in addition to money horse owners spend on veterinarian fees, farm equipment, transportation and rural municipal taxes. In total, he said thc horse racing industry generates $2.2 annually in economic. activity and some 50,000 derive their income from this. If casino-style gambling is allowed to move into rural Ontario, the horse industry estimates it will lose more than 18,000 jobs. Most of these people have non-transferable skills and would end up on the rural Ontario welfare roles, said Mr. George. He went on to say that despite numerous requests to the government, there has been no study done on the impact of casinos on rural Ontario economies. "If Premier Rae is determined . to get into gambling," said Mr. George, "we'll give him a 15 year old tractor, 1000 acres of land and a truck-load of seed corn. Then he'll be in the farming business and know what real gambling is all about." ' OAHRC president Dr. Glen Brown said he was delighted that AMO backed the issue saying "only Ontario chronically tax-hungry government, local politicians who mistakenly believe casinos will revitalize their communities, and developers are pushing the casino issue."
