= "18 -- Scugog Citizen - Tuesday, August 31, 1993 4 CITIZEN SPORTS OASA banner for Legion Squirts The Port Perry Legion Squirts have brought home another OASA championship for the town of Port Perry After watching the Midget team do it last weekend the boys really hoped to make it back to back wins for Port Perry Minor Softball The weather was perfect for. baseball and the large crowds on hand at all the games were treated to some very good baseball. The eight teams that were in the tournament were from Elmira, Meaford, St Mary's, New Hamburg, Ernestown, Paris and Walkerton. Opening ceremonies were conducted by Wayne Venning with OASA tournament convener Carolyn Best. All teams participated and the fans were treated to a golden glove and accuracy throwing contest sponsored by Team Canadian Tire. The first pitch was thrown by Vin Walker for the OASA and it was time to play ball Port's first game was against Elmira. Chris Jones started at pitching for this game and fanned 11 batters while allowing only one hit. Mark Richardson took over in the fifth inning and allowed one hit, struck out two and walked four. They allowed Elmira only one run against them. Port came out very aggressively at the bat as they collected 14 hits. Darryl Dalton, Mike Versage, Ryan McQuade, Mark Richardson presented trophy. A happy moment for coach Dave Dalton and members of the Squirt team. At left Is OASA convenor Carolyn Best who St. Mary's pitcher Jay Pickering threw four games on Sunday, and gets a consoling pat on the shoulder from a teammate after the final loss to Port Perry. and Chris Jones each collected two singles while Reid McTaggart had one. Chris Monsma and Sean Jeffrey each hit a double and Jeff Ashton hit a homerun, The only base on balls that the Elmira pitcher gave up went to Chris Monsma. Final score Port Perry 9 Elmira 1. The next opponent was New Hamburg and the coaching staff knew that this would be a little bit different ball game. Chris Jones pitéhed the entire game allowing five hits while striking out 13 and giving up three walks. Defensive highlight of the game was a running diving catch made by Mike MacLennan in right field to start the fourth inning. Ryan McQuade and Jeff Ashton reached base on errors in the second inning while Mark got on base as he was hit by a pitch. Ryan and Jeff scored on pass balls and Mark was hit home on a single by Mike MacLennan. In the fourth Reid reached first on a fielder's choice, stole second, advance to third on a hit by Mike and came home as the first baseman couldn't handle the throw on the attempt to get Mike out. In the fifth inning Mike Versage hit a single and was forced out on a hit by Sean. Sean, however, was advanced on a single by Ryan McQuade and scored on a hit by Chris Jones that was bobbled by the centre fielder. Port allowed New Hamburg one run in each of the sixth and seventh innings to leave the score at 6- 2 for Port Perry. Sunday morning our first opponent was St Mary's whom we had met in the final of the Stratford tournament and we knew we were up against a very &lng pitcher by the name of Jay Pickering. St Mary's scored a run in the first inning on an overthrow by catcher Jeff Ashton trying to get the first batter of the day who had reached on a walk. St. Mary's scored another run in the second on a hit and another error so it was easy to see that the boys were a little nervous. Port didn't get on the scoreboard until the fifth when Chris Jones hit a single and Sean was put in as a pinch runner. The speedy Sean stole second, advanced to third and eventually scored on a pass ball. In the sixth inning Mike Versage hit a single and Chris Monsma beat out a perfect bunt to get things going. Ryan McQuade hit a single and with the good base running that this team displays both Mike and Chris scored. Port by this time had settled down defensively and didn't allow St Mary's to score any more runs. Ryan McQuade had an excellent game at shortstop with a good glove hand and strong accurate throws to gun down five rynners at first base Mike V was strong at third base as he picked up a bunt attempt and got the lead runner going to second. Chris pitched the entire game and allowed only two hits while fanning 14 and giving up one base on balls. This win put Port in the driver's seat as they now had to rest while St Mary's had to play against New Hamburg to see who would advance to the final. St Mary's came out on top and it was Port and St Mary's again. This game sot up to be a pitcher's duel. Chris struck out nine batters, allowed six hits and walked only one batter. Jay Pickering struck out ten Port batters and allowed five Port Perry hits. Port Perry stranded five batters on base and could not score them. All the hits were singles by Darryl, Mike V, Reid (a nice bunt), Ryan M and Chris J. Port allowed St Mary's to score the only run of the game in the third inning on a pass ball at the plate. With the bases loaded Port stopped them there with a nice throw by Ryan to Jeff at the plate who made a nice stretch to quiet the attack. Final score 1-0. With this tournament being a double knockout this meant Jay Pickering that the two teams would have to play another game after 15 minutes rest. This would be Chris' third game of the day and Jay's fourth game in a row which is an awful lot to expect from a 12 year old boy However both pitchers came through with flying colours Chris had nine strikeouts, allowed five hits and only walked one. Jay struck out seven allowed five hits and three base on balls. There was no scoring until the fifth inning despite hits by Darryl, Reid and Chris M in the early innings. However in the fifth inning the bats came alive and Jay Pickering started to run out of steam. Chris Jones reached first on an error to start the inning. Aaron Lycett was put in as a pinch runner. Chris M picked up a walk next. Darryl Rit a single and with good base running Aaron scored the first run of the game. Excitement started to mount as there were two runners on and only one out. Mike V hit a triple to score both Darryl and Chris. Reid reached first base on an error by the first baseman allowing Mike to score from third. Reid advanced with a stolen base and a pass ball to third. Jeff Ashton reached first on a third strike that allowed Reid to score as the catcher made a throwing error to-first. Jeff advanced on some pass balls and scored on a delayed steal. At the end of five innings it was Port 6 8t Mary's 0. In the top of the sixth St Mary's scored one run on a single by pitcher Jay Pickering and a triple by Matt Holliday. Port scored one more run in the bottom of the sixth and held them down in the seventh to leave the score at 7-1. This win put the finishing touches to a very ful year for this team and they have all worked very hard and all of their parents should be very proud of these young men. Not only are they good ball players but they are a fun Turn to page 21
