Not present for photo lan Cooper and Larry Flames scorch the Gators A hat trick by sharp-shooter Rick Cormier led the IGA Flames to an 8-4 victory over the Galley Gators in the third and deciding game of the Port Perry Ball Hockey League championships August 26. Cormier fired a pair of goals within a minute of each other early in the third period, then added a thifd into an empty net late in the game to give Flames that extra bit bit of insurance. The Flames never trailed in this high scoring affair, although the Gators had kept the game close until late in the opening period. Flames drew first blood early in the contest when forward Greg Fedyk scored from the side of the Gators net with help from Kevin Wilson and Jarrett Harman. Gators got that one back in the first when John Lally fed John Harman in front of the Flames cage and he beat Glenn Archibald with a low wrist shot, But Wilson replied for the Flames a minute later on a set up from Jarrett Harman and Fedyk to make it 2-1. Gators once more tied the match as Lally got the blade of his stick on a pass from John Harman in front of the crease, with Brad Menzies also getting an assist. The goal that really set the stage for the Flames came with 3.8 seconds left in the opening period as Wilson was set up in front by Jarrett Harman who collected his third straight assist and gave the Flames a 3- 2 lead. Then Cormier went to work, first with a blazing shot from the deep slot that sailed into 'HALF BACK' Buy 2 - Get 1 FREE Pass the top corner on the stick side of Gator goalie Wayne Lown. Clair Cornish and Monty Harman drew the assists. Less than two minutes later Kelly Ryan and M. Harman set Cormier up again, this time from 15 feet out and he made no mistake with a low shot to give the Flames a commanding 5-2 lead. Wilson made it 6-2 as he battled defenseman Phil McBride for a high bouncer at the side of the Gators net. The ball just trickled across the goal line. The Gators started to take control of the ball the period as they battled to get back in this one. Menzies cut the lead in half with over nine minutes to play on a screened shot from the deep slot with Kevin Gibson and Warren Geer helping on the set up. But any hopes of a Gator come-back were pretty well snuffed out with just over six minutes to play as Ken Harman tipped home a pass from Ryan to open a four goal cushion. The teams traded goals in the final two minutes, but the Flames had prevailed in this shoot-out 8-4. Flames won the opening game of this best of three final, but the Gators forced the tie breaker on Wednesday night when they broke open a close contest midway through the third period, then added a couple into an empty net for a 5-2 victory. Thursday's game may have been a bit of a nightmare for goalies Archibald and Lown who saw a ton of orange rubber fired their way, but it was a highly entertaining match to watch. Port Perry District Girl Guides ALL REGISTRATIONS my Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, August 31, 1993 -- 19 4 Eagles go down fighting at OASA in Tavistock The Port Perry Antrim House Eagles gave it their best shot, but came up just a bit short at the OASA Mens Cc championship tournament held in Tavistock over the weekend. Playing coach Larry Pilkey had nothing but praise for the way the team performed against some tough competition, ending up 5th out of 16 teams. "I really want to express my thanks to all the guygson the team for way they played," he told ti tizen, adding the support the team got from its fans was much appreciated as well. The Antrim Eagles got off on the right foot in this double knock-out event, g their three, scattering hits all over the field to dump Lambeth 6-2. Todd Wilbur got the win on the mound, coming in to relieve Williame who banged up his leg sliding into home. Wilbur was named game MVP. In game four, Eagles mercied Wiarton 9-2 in five innings as they bounced eight hits and took advantage of a pair of round-trippers by Pilkey. John Annis went the five innings on thedmound for the victory. Eagles went down to defeat and were out of the tournament in game five against Glencoe who scored four times in the first inning off the injured Williams. Eagles mounted something of first game 2-1 in ten innings over Staffordville. Lawrie Williams drove home Pilkey with the winning run and John Annis was named game MVP after firing 20 strike-outs in this one. Game two was a heart breaker as the Eagles went down to defeat 1-0 at the hands of Camden East. Mike Clark and Williams did the pitching in this one. Eagles were hot over a disputed call at second base. They rebounded in game a back to cut the lead in half, but that was all they could muster as Glencoe held on for the 4-2 win. After this strong outing at the OASA, Eagles head into Oshawa City and District League playoffs this week with games on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Bath start at 8:30 at Durham Fields in Oshawa.
