my Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, August 31, 1993 --5 4 Changes to Ward system? What changes? A proposal by Scugog Township to eliminate the area council seat and create a new Ward 6 has run into virtually no opposition, council was told Monday afternoon. Administrator Earl Cuddie said as of Monday the Township had received no written objections to the move, with the final date for filing an Saturday, objection August 31. The Township wants to reduce the size of Ward 1 by adding lands to Ward 2, then cutting Ward 2 in half. The present area, or Township-at- large seat would be eliminated completely to make room for the new Ward 6. But Don Cochrane, who held the area council seat for several terms said Monday he is opposed to the way the new ward is being created. Ward 1, he told council is over 110 square miles. The two new wards will be less than four square miles each. Mr. Cochrane, even when he was a member of council was long an advocate of doing away with the area council seat by splitting Ward 1 on a north- south basis and creating another ward that way. Mayor Howard Hall disputed a claim by Mr. Cochrane that the present ward re-alignment will create "two Port Perry wards." "The population growth will be in the areas that are fully serviced, in the immediate area of Port Perry," said the Mayor. Mr. Cochrane said he has no intention of filing an objection with the Ontario Municipal Board over the proposed ward re-alignment. "If I can't convince council, there is no way I would be able to convince them (the Municipal Board) he said.
