~Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, September 28, 1993 -- 9 VIEWPOINT by John B. McClelland LETTERS TO EDITOR GOOD LUCK, DAVID You have to admire David Talbot. He's a 20-year old Port Perry native who is deeply concerned that the youth, the young people, his generation in this country have no say in Ottawa over affairs that affect their lives and their future. There are no members of Parliament even close to being just 21, or even 25 years of age. And most are so caught in the other problems of the day, not to mention getting re-elected every four years, they are out of touch with what is going on in the heads and minds of a whole generation of Canadians (those 25 and under) Talbot decided to do something about this. He is running for Parliament as an independent in the riding of Ottawa-Vanier in the nation's capital. Home to Port Perry last weekend for a visit, he readily agreed to an interview with the Citizen. Frankly, | was impressed with thie young man's dedication, his opinions, his ability to express himself and his sheer pluck He concedes that realistically, he has virtually mo chance of winning the Oftawa-Vanier seat on October 25. He can live with that. But what he's doing is finding a ready-made platform to draw attention to what he feels is the alienation of today's youth and the lack of representation, or even a voice, in corridors of power, especially on Parliament Hall Good for him. You've got to a have a certain amount of moxy to run for Parliament. David is running his campaign on a financial shoe-string (he had to scrape together the $1,000 deposit) has no well-oiled campaign team behind him, has no backing from a political party, and is trying to un seat a Liberal (Jean Robert Gauthier) who has held the riding for 21 years That's not an easy task for a 20 year old, gr anybody else, for that matter ) I have only one quibble with David. He said he has no intention of getting involved in party politics some time in the future. He ought to re-consider. Committed young people like him can best bring about needed change in this country by working from within. Sure, the party system is cumbersome and awkward, but in the long run it is the party in power that brings about needed changes. I think David would do a great job making his case in a caucus room full of MP twice his age. I admire David for sticking his neck out for his generation, a cause that needs to be addressed, by the way. When the next election rolls around in four years or so, David could still an effective spokesman for he would have more im chance to bring about for an established patty. Perhaps hp/l¥ change his mind. Somehow, 1 Rave a feeling we will hear more ofthis young man. <I the meantime, myself and a lot of people from Port Perry will be keeping an eye on the returns from Ottawa- Vanier on election night ONE NUTTY DOG: My dog Willie has developed a severe neurosis. He refuses to leave the driveway for a walk downtown. Hell gladly jump in the truck to be driven to the waterfront park or the soccer fields where he runs to his heart's content. But can [ get him out of the driveway? Not a chance The big lug first of all sits down and refuses to budge. If I insist, he flops on his belly and just stays there ] can't drag him on the leash cause he weighs 120 pounds He seems to be afraid of traffic sounds, loud noises and so on. I'd like to hear from other dog owners who experienced the same thing. Were they able to bring their dogs out of this neurosis? ge running m Board says thanks for the, help To the Editor, This past summer has been a very busy one at Scugog Shores Museum. In response to the letter "Looking at the Other Side of Abortion Issue" and "Prolifers should alter their methods" I would like to give some unknown facts. Mrs ox said "The other 'responsibility' of free speech is that it's a useless freedom if no one listens. Have you heard that the leading abortionist, Dr Bernard Nathanson in New York state changed his mind, after he finally faced the fact, abortion is murder and now is dedicated to saving babies in neo-natal specialty. Also Dr Aikman the leading abortionist in Quebec, after seeing a baby survive an abbrtion, is now also dedicated to saving babies from abortion and mothers from a violent and traumatic experience. Dr M Rawlings did one abortion and called himself a murderer, and regrets it every moment of his life. Or Bev Hadland who had three abortions and was left sterile - has produced a video "Hang on to Your Hormones™ and speaks to thousands of high school students about her suffering greatly in the aftermath of the procedure proponenta (pro chaice) hail as so "prompt and painless" Untold numbers of women and men are stumbling through the emotional carnage following an abortion some believing their decision was wrong, others racked with uncertainty. The pain runs deep - when you find you're sterile or on the anniversary date of your abortion - or when you look at every baby and wonder what your baby would have looked like - ar what they could have accomplished in life Have we aborted the one who ould have found a cure to cancer? or a great artist, poet?! Even animals don't abort and fiercely protect their young even unto death. Please get informed - many girls and women have changed their minds when they see the film "The Silent Scream" and realize it's a baby and not a blob of tissue. I wish you could be there to pick up the pieces of a young girl with Post Abortion Syndrome. We counsel these girls who ache over the ramifications of their "right to choose". But God does forgive and heals and gives hope. The real problem is many can't forgive themselves. Their tears, pain and bitterness of being deceived goes on and on. As a registered nurse I've been to many conferences on Abortion and its complications, and if you believe God created life for a purpose and every life has worth - even the handicapped and the fetal alcohol effected child - whom you ask who do you expect to adopt "it™? | know many loving compassionate people who would and have adopted mixed races, and handicapped or physically and mentally challenged "children" not "IT" Oh, yes, you mentioned aborting those who are raped, who represent less than 001% of those who get pregnant as a result of rape. Maybe you would be enlightened to know the great singer Ethel Waters was the result of her mother being raped at age 14, also Stevie Wonder and Lee Ezell's daughter who wrote "The Missing Piece" and was the only child she ever had and had her adopted 26 years ago and was recently reunited with her daughter who presented her with two beautiful granddaughters, all the result of being raped Finally, by killing these preborn babies we have wiped out a future generation of consumers and Canada has a declining population so must depend on costly immigration. We also must not forget these women had a choice to hop in bed and be irresponsible to get pregnant . with free or affordable contraceptives from Planned Parenthood - there's no excuse ME Johansen, Registered nurse Port Perry School bus woes To the Editor: | am writing this letter 1 appeal to any other parents who are having problems with the new bus policies of the Durham Board of Education The new policies on busing of many of the children in the area have forced parents to "divide" their families among different schools, having to perhaps transport one of their children when the bus comes directly to their home to pick up another child from the same household attending the same whool There are other scenarios regarding other problems. | would like anyone who i» willing to have hisher name added to a list that will be taken to the Board's director of transportation, to please contact me as soon as possible, to help get some ghanges made to this ridiculous new We need your support to help fight this oyster Bronwyn Syvret 985.0337 Scugog Township Costs going up To the Editor: All the citizens who receive their television signal through cable are again required to pay a large increase in their monthly retes Cable TV rates are more than three times the cost for a phone in your home and you can connect & phone at every jatk, h dd 1 TV sets in the home House, Country Heirlooms, Port Perry Country Plea Market and Halenda's Ment Market Finally a special thanks te the community newspapers for their dedication to the preservation of local history Thank you all sincerely, Board of Directors Scugng Shores Museum Karen Puckrin, Secretary are required to pay an additional amount that is using the cable system AL a time when a determined effort is being made to control costa, an increase in cable TV rates approaching ten per cent is Froensive Rate increases surely must be based on d quality of reception, inf) y pressures that would increase the cost of installation and service, and the need to make extensive changes to the system Hopefully, these cable subscribers whe feel that $335 per year is an excessive amount for the service will let Compton Cable know about their concerns.
