\ NDP is the one for me To the Editor: People keep asking why I have an NDP sign supporting Lucy Rybka-Becker on my lawn. It isn't just because I agree with NDP policies on the free trade and NAFTA deals, fair taxation, drugs and medicare, creating jobs, and so on. Nor is it simply because the NDP seems to be the only major party even bothering to ize the envir t as an issue in this' campaign with their policy paper, "Environmentally-Aware Policies Create Jobs and Strengthen the Economy". The Liberals and Conservatives are not even paying lip service to the environment, a surprising oversight given the example of the cod fishery and its lesson that, without a healthy environment, there is no economy. Another reason I like the NDP is that Audrey McLaughlin seems to be a sincere person with a genuine v v nish Toy, £\ Victorian and Country Accents - Gifts - Antiques 139 Queen St. Unit 3, Port Perry (NE. Corner of Water & Queen) 985-1239 understanding of the kinds of problems face daily by ordinary Canadians. She does not promise to bring back "the good old days", a futile aim if ever there was one in this rapidly-changing world. She knows that an issue as complicated as crime cannot be solved by simply "getting tougher", and as an ex-parole officer, I "appreciate her awareness that the causes of crime must be addressed right in our own communities. People seem suspicious of McLaughlin because she is decent and mild-mannered, not the dog-eat-dog type of politician we have become accustomed to. She does not have a cozy relationship with Big Business, but empathizes instead with regular folks. She my Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, Seplember 25, 1993 -- 11 4 offers a new style of leadership which is not simply showmanship, and she is a consensus-builder who seeks to unite, rather than divide. Isn't this the kind of leader Canadians should be getting excited about? As long as we continue to vote for candidates who are one issue wonders, who promise easy answers to complex problems, and whom we choose on the basis of "sound bites", we will continue to get the kind of government we deserve. On October 25, 1 will vote for Lucy Rybka- Becker and the NDP, because I honestly believe they best represent the majority of Canadians.
