He's the fastest three-year-old this season on a mile track (1:49.3), set a world record time of 1:50.1 on a five-eights track and made history on a half mile track with a time of 1:51.1 In an interview with the Citizen over the weekend, Mr Heffering stated his colt "raced all he could go and just tired in the last twenty yards or so to the finish line, being beaten by Life Sign". Actually, Life Sign and Presidential Ball, both three-year-old pacers, have been arch rivals of Riyadh's on the track for most of this year. Presidential Ball placed third at the wire During the presentations of The Little Brown Jug to George Segal, owner of Life Sign, Segal made the remark, "Mr Heffering already has a Little Brown Jug, this year it belongs to me" Indeed, HefTering does own one, for it was just two years ago that another one of his pacing three- year-olds, Precious Bunny, won this renowned race. Precious Bunny then went on to become "The Three- Year-Old Horse of the Year' and Horse of the Year in North America' Of the 24 starts Riyadh has had, all being Stakes races, he's had 14 wins and has emerged in the top three placings 22 times. Mr Heffering bought Riyadh in March of this year, paying $200,000. US. While many potential buyers felt the price was too high Heffering thought he was 'a bargain'. Now that the colt has earned purse money of over $1,000,000. this year Heffering smiles and says, "now | feel he was a real bargain" There is one more big race for Riyadh and that is the Breeder's Crown in Freehold, NJ, on October 23 where he'll be up against Presidential Ball and Life Sign again. Heffering feels that whichever horse wins The Breeder's Crown will likely be named "The Three-Year-Old Horse of the Year Then the plans are for Riyadh to hang up his harness and retire to stud at Brightstone Farm in Bloomsburg, PA. Precious Bunny is currently standing at stud at Casselton Farms in Goshen, NY. For most of his life Heffering has been known world-wide for his success as a holstein cattle breeder at Hanover Hill farm in Port Perry. It was just over five years ago when Riyadh owner Pete Heffering. he began taking an interest in horses and he's enjoying his new venture. He is still a top cattle breeder in the world, too. At 61 years of age, Heffering never likes to stay idle. Presently, he is off to Lexington, KY to attend a yearling sale and view some foals sired by Precious Bunny. Then he is attending the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin and back to Freehold on October 9 to watch a two-year-old pater of his, Sable Matters, in a Stakes race With Jim Morrill, Jr. in the driver's seat, keep your eyes posted for Riyadh on October 23 at The Breeder's Crown. 4-H Beef Show in Lindsay The Lindsay Central Exhibition was the setting for the annual Beef 4-H Championship Show, held September 22 with Doug Lemon judging Junior Beef Showmanship: 1 Lisa Nesbitt (Durham East) 2 Troy Karkoulas, 3.
