Convenor Jon Dawson says get well soon to the three players who needed medical attention In the tournament, Lawn bowlers can relax After another very busy and It's not quite a runaway's raft trip down the Mississippi but this big- league adventure surely befits a boy named Huck. Huck Fleer is the boy and his first day in major-league baseball is one he'll always remember and not just for the pitches he threw. Flener is a 24 year old Californian in his fourth year of pro ball. He'd been playing admirably and anonymously in the minors at Knoxville, Tennessee. A couple of nifty playoff outings looked like they'd put the cap on a satisfying 13 :6 season for the left-hander until the dominos started tofall and Huck was thrust into a heart-stopping pennant race at Tiger Stadium, Isn't this starting to sound like the time when the storm came up and Huck and Jim were. . . well, that's another story. The Toronto Blue Jays were in Detroit with 18 games to go in the season, trying to hold off the charging Yankees and Orioles when they. determined that Jack Morris would have to miss a start with an elbow injury, so they summoned Flener as insurance that they wouldn't be caught short of pitching. The manager had no intention of using him right away and the equipment man had no idea who was coming; so Flener was given a uniform with the name Green on the back, (His Knoxville. team-mate, Shawn Green, was to be called up on the trip so the Jays had a'jersey along for him.) The day was eventful enough for Greg Flener, who was nicknamed Huck by his dad. He'd flown from Knoxville to Detroit, looked around Tiger Stadium for the first time and then was watching an action-packed game from the bullpen when the next domino fell. The Jays were ahead by a run, the starter was gone, and the parade of relievers was on. Cito Gaston had used a left-hander and needed another ona ready but Al Leiter had a stiff back and couldn't get loose, so the call went to Flener. As fast as you could say "Duke of Bilgewater", Huck was called up, loosened up and then his turn came up. He got the ball with two out in the eighth inning, two runners on and the game, on the line. Just after the scoreboard announced that some guy named Green was in the. game, Huck Flener tossed a fastball to Chad Krueter. He followed it with a slider that induced a lazy fly ball to left field and the inning was over. Toronto held on for the win and Huck was a hero. Swarmed at his locker after the game, Flener coolly said he hadn't been nervous but that belied the fact that in his haste and excitement he'd forgotten his cleats, glove and jock strap at the hotel, That's right: he'd shown up at the park like an orphan and by the end of the night was truly part of the family. The ragamuffin reliever went to the mound in a pressure-packed game wearing Shawn Green's uniform, Pat Hentgen's cleats and Al Leiter's glove. We didn't think it appropriate to ask whase private protector he might have borrowed. Surely he did't go out that night for his big-league debut without a . . .nah! Samuel Clemens would have loved this yarn.
