Operation Impact starts Oct. 2 -- buckle your belts On Saturday, October 2, a 24 hour seatbelt blitz called "Operation Impact" will kick off a two-week campaign by Durham Regional Police, in conjunction with all Ontario Police Services, to focus attention on seat belt awareness. The campaign is aimed at educating the public to the dangers of not buckling up, and the improper use of child restraint seats. While more Ontarians are using seat belts than ever before, Police are still concerned about the needless injuries and deaths that result from the small percentage who are not buckling up. Similarly, studies have shown that two- thirds of the child restraint seats in use are not properly secured Police will be focusing their attention on the drivers of passenger vans and light trucks in particular during the campaign. Statistics compiled show that over 84% of car drivers, 78% of van drivers and 63% of light truck drivers buckle up. Did you know? - unbelted drivers are 15 times more likely to be killed and five times more likely to be hospitalized than drivers who have buckled up. -Seat belt use is lower among male drivers (81.6%) than female drivers (90%) « -Young drivers are less likely to be buckled up than drivers over age 50 -Fines for not using your seatbelt begin at $90 and rise to a maximum of $500.
