= 6 -- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, Septemb 28, 1993 --- David Talbot seeks seat in Ottawa riding David Talbot has no illusions about his chance of winning a seat in the House of Commons on October 25. Oh, sure, the 20-year old Port Perry native woyld be thrilled to represent the people of Ottawa. Vanier, a downtown riding in the nation's capital But running as an independent candidate with virtually no money and no organization team behind him, he knows his chances are slim, at best. So, why is Talbot running? He is very concerned that the young people of Canada (25 and under) moderator : sponsored by : ICO O NE S00 3 (61 DRL 0) 3d od BY 6 ON DECISION DURHAM 93 All Candidates' Meeting WEDNESDAY, | OCTOBER 6th 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM in the Auditorium of PORT RERRY HIGH SCHOOL Dave Robinson, Kinsmen Club of Port Perry Kinsmen Club of Port Perry and Port Perry High School have virtually no voice in the Commons or on issues that directly impact on them and their future. "The problems facing young Talbot believes strongly that there must be a clearly defined policy on education, for example, to dove-tail secondary and post- secondary schooling with a dically ch \g job market. people today are much di from the problems ten or 15 years agg," he told the Citizen in an intervie t week. He notes thit the Ministry of State for Youth was removed from Cabinet recently and lumped in with the Human Resources Ministry. Even the sitting MPs, by virtue of their age, are out of touch with the realities facing young people "We don't even have a decent apprenticeship program in this country," he said. Many young people are staying in school longer because there are no jobs available, but they are taking courses and degrees which will do little to land them a job in this changing world. He is also speaking out about the national debt and the on- going deficit governments roll up each year. "It already takes one-third of all tax dollars to pay the interest on the debt. What will it be in ten years? We'll have no choice but to cut social and health care," he said Talbot believes the federal government can cut its di necessary now to avoid saddling future generations with a debt load they will be unable to pay. A graduate of Port Perry High School and now in his second year of political science studies at Ottawa University, Talbot got a first hand look at the Canadian system of government while working as a page in the House of Commons last year. It was an experience that left him with mixed feelings. He gained great respect for the House as an institution, but was sadly disappointed in the performance of many of its sitting members. "They are not representing the wishes of their constituents," he said, adding the system (in Parliament) badly need free votes where members are not tied to the party line The riding of Ottawa-Vanier has voted Liberal for almost as in many areas, reduce waste and duplication, weed out abuse and streamline programs, all of which will help reduce the deficit and pay down the debt. Some measures, he admits, will be "painful." But they are long as anybody can r It is a diverse riding which takes in rich, up-scale Rockeliff Park, the campus of Ottawa U,, and some of the poorest areas of the capital It is about 40 per cent francophone and Talbot finds All at Guaranteed Low Prices! Talbot is finding out that running for Parliament takes a lot of time and at least some money. He had to put up $1,000 (as does every candidate) but will get that back if he gets 15 per cent of the vote. As for how much he'll spend between now and Oct. 25, that depends on how much he can raise, mostly from friends and fellow students. "We'll be able to put up a few signs and a few posters," he said with a smile. But there's no budget for expensive media ads. Still, this bright and articulate young man is not daunted by these obstacles He is determined to be a voice for young people and what better way than running a serious campaign in a high profile riding that sits almost in the shadow of the Peace Tower His venture into politics has forced him to curtail his regular studies this term (though he hopes the university will give him a credit for his run at a House of Commons seat) Talbot spent five years on student council at PPHS, and always had an interest in Canadian politics. "But | never got angry before," he said Is this run as an independent a stepping stone to join a party and run again in some future election? Nope, he replied. He has no intention of being part of the party system Barring some kind of a miracle at the polls in Ottawa-Vanier riding October 25, he'll return to his studies and eventually pursue a career in the diplomatic service.
