== November LETTERS TO THE EDITOR =| 'Born : again Catholic' responds to letter To the Editor: Re: "Feminism and the Church," (letter Scugog Citizen, October 26) I think even Frank Trainor will have to admit that your average feminist has more sense than to waste her energies taking on the Roman Church. More injustices are being rectified for our daughters via the political process, commerce, education and pay equity. As a Catholic, I took Frank's advice to "return to Pope Pius," land found that his (infallible?) encyclical stated that workers co-operatives were. evil because they upset the status quo. Pius the time, that of the original sin (recently over-turned in the new Catechism) This theory was written after Augustus had fathered a son by his concubine! Again, | read the other prime mover of the strictly celibate, male clerical model --St. Jerome. He could not even manage monogamy and had his two mistresses made nups and is buried between them. Don't believe me? Read their final confessions. I also checked out this M. Fox mentioned by Trainor in his letter, and found that he isa Dx ican priest who d told us that God i ded there to be rulers and very wealthy/very poor people. Shortly after, Pope John reversed that and ever since Co- ops have been blessed. As well known priest recently said "some Papal encyclicals have been like baby's diapers--they should have been changed more often (and for the same reason)" Trainor also recommends-the teachings of Thomas Aquinas who I found had written: "Women are the gateway to the Devil," and much more along the same line ; So, I turned to St. Augustus, that great proponent of celibacy, who had some inspired visions, but also dreamed up many religious theories, most of which were rejected by Pope Gregory. Except for one that fit nicely with the Gregorian scheme of the un-forgivable sin. Together with the Canada Film Board, he produced a video that unfolds the historical truth about the "holocaust of women" and native peoples. You can borrow a copy from the Scugog Library, assuming the red necks have not started a book/video burning campaign. It tells of the work of Dominican priest Krammer and Pope Gregory V11 &n his (infallible?) moral encyclical "Malus Malefactum." You won't find a transcript of that anywhere, because it is the worst example of sadism and pornographic violence against women in history. It resulted in six generations of children watching their mothers tortured and burned to death. A] Conservative estimates say at least 12 million were slaughtered. The rest of these innocent victims were out native Germanic, Celtic, Gaelic and Scandinavian ancestors. This is the year (1993) of native peoples whose ancient belief systems had much in common with North American and others around the world. They worshipped nature, prayed for successful hunts and crops, tried to heal and feared evil spirits. We owe the basis of our pharmaceuticals to herbs used by these simple old healers Anthropology tells us that devil worship was un-heard of and was counter-culture among ancient pagans. Demonology was invented by a power-hungry, conquering, expansionist culture that blasphemously misused early Christianity and Catholicism. When there was famine and disease, the people were told not to blame the church that ruled, but that there are "witches a-foot." The result was much like the ethnic cleansing that has followed ever since. Nothing changes but the dates and the labels from witch to Jew, Protestant, gay, black, native immigrant, feminist socialist, Serb, Croat or whatever is in 0. Our present Pope has started a return to married priests (which we had for the first thousand years) Pope Gregory changed that tradition for a major reason--priests' heirs were draining the church of its wealth through inheiritances. When celibacy was enforced, the wives and children of priests were often mirdered, or sent into slavery or prostitution. Why do educated people remain Catholic knowing that many Popes were debauched (even incestuous like the Borgias) with many Papal accessions going to illegitimate sons, and also being aware of recent scandals in this century? It is very painful. It takes prayer and soul searching. These kind of things happen when good people have their consciences numbed by the fear mongering propaganda of the racist and sexist. Prayerful persons have to be vigilant and stand up for Christ's examples. We believe that even ~though the evil of some ambitious and bigoted clerics and laity have often dominated, Christ promised that the Holy spirit will finally prevail to bring peace, justice and wisdom to us. Also, the knowledge that these types of persons make up only the "institutional church," which is of man, not of God. No one denomination's leadership is better than another, the basic truth is in the words of Christ. Between periods of shame there were periods of grace that have gifted Catholicism with a bountiful heritage of social justice, much documented as law in Vatican 11. Sadly, in the Catholic Church there are those who want to treat their faith and gospels as an "a la carte" menu. They pick out what they like such as "thou art Peter and upon this rock | shall build my Church," then teach us that this is the final word on apostolic accession and papal infallibility. Incidently, that theory was only adopted in July, 1870 by Pius 1X because he was under pressure to abandon physical persecution for a more subtle way to ostracize, humiliate and control. COMMISSIONER OF WORKS part of the Gospel that challenges clerical behavior is met with the rebuttal that it was written 70 years after Christ died. So don't take it too literally. Catholic Church teachings hinge on the Resurrection and Pentecost. The Holy Spirit gifted the Gospel writers and it is the backbone of our belief system that the "body of Christ," and Vatican councils are guided by the same Holy Spirit. ~ Trainor says in his letter last week "....the second Vatican Council did not bring renewal, but odious, modernist revolution." You can't have ig both ways, Frank. You either have reverence for Vaticgn 11, or join Arch Bishop Le Pevre's right wing renegades who yearn for the dark ages. 1 was active in Pro Life for over a decade. It pained me to walk away because of the small, but determined number who infiltrated with their own secret agenda. They couldn't care less for sanctity of life, in fact, they promote the death penalty. They. are like wolves in sheep clothing, deceiving good Christians into believing that everything that goes wrong, from social decline to the recession, is to be blamed on married career women. The last straw. comes from the worst women haters who invented the claim that the "truly raped" do not get pregnant because their bodies go into shock. Such claims ") based on hate. Most rapes e not reported, contraceptives, or may an infertile time in their There is no viable back the allegati Bosnian systemati¢/rapes and the many convigfed rapists whose victim# do become pregnant proves the falsehood. This evil allegation would further abuse the innocent victim as it suggests her pregnancy proves that she was either a liar or enjoyed the act, otherwise her body would have gone into shock. The church of our grandparents is as different today as it will be for our grandchildren. When recently interviewed a senior Arch Bishop was asked if he conld imagine women priests. His reply was "that's possible under the next Pope." Of course, change is always painful. Like all living and growing things, the Church has never stopped evolving. We survive through prayer, generosity, wisdom and love. "If I have the eloquence of angels, but speak without love, I am simply a symbol crashing." (1 . 12) "God has given us this covenent which is not of written letters but of the the Spirit: written letters bring death, but the Spirit brings life." (2 Cor. 3:1-6) In his letter last week, Trainor talks of the "Church's weakest link." I think we all now have seen where it is. E.M. Gilbert, "Born Again Catholic" Scugog Township.
