my Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, November 3, 1993 -- 13 _-a Port Perry Dart League takes flight Darts has long been a time- honoured sport in the United Kingdom. Walk into any pub at any time and chances are you'll see a game in progress. And the sport is rapidly gaining in popularity on this side of the Atlantic. In Port Perry, the newly formed Pub Darts League now has ten teams with ten players on each team. And Alan Light, one of the League organizers, says there is already a waiting list of players which means that next year, it will grow by another five or six teams. Mr. Light a native of Bristol, England and Roy Povey, also a Bristol native, organized the Port Perry léague this fall when approached by pub owners Roger Chetwyn of the Derbyshire and Dave Hillier of the Antrim House. "They (the pub owners) wanted to know if there was sufficient interest to organize a league," said Mr. Light in a recent interview with the the Citizen. They contacted Emiels Place and Centennial Lanes who came up with their teams to make four, and from there it just snowballed to the point where there are now ten teams. The League consists of two teams from Antrim House, two from Crandells Roadhouse, two from Trader Sam's, and one each from Derbyshire, Centennial Lanee, Emiel"s Place and Port Legion Branch 419. The teams face each other at the various establishments each Monday evening Mr. Light said the pub owners are delighted with the league as it provides competition for the players and players can make it as competitive as they want. Darts can also mean big money in the United Kingdom where the top players command large fees for endorsements and exhibition matches. Both Mr. Povey and Mr. Light said darts is a sport that does not need a great deal of athletic ability/ Eye/hand co-ordination, proper arm movement and release are the keys, but the top players spend countless hours working to improve their games. Depending on the game (triples, doubles or singles) the scores start at 701, 601 or 601 and players must reduce the numbers to exactly zero. And they must "double out" to get to zero. Players must stand at 7' 9" from the face of the board and the bulls-eye is 5° 9" from the floor. The Port Perry League is made up of men and women. In fact, almost all the teams have female members. The sport has been played for centuries, and Mr. Light believes it got its start when King Henry 8 wanted to find a way to keep the hand/eye coordination of his archers sharp when they were not in battle. They started tossing arrows at indoor targets and the sport evolved from there. Indeed, darts are still called "arrows," and the feathers are known as "flights." A set of darts can cost as little as $10, or upwards of $500 for a set custom made to suit the needs of the player. The Port Perry Pubs League will continue play each Monday through to January 24 when a round-robin playoff will start. Team and individual winners will receive trophies at an end- of-year banquet in the spring. Already the League is looking to expand to 16 teams for next fall and anyone wishing info can contact Mr. Light at 985- 0119 or Mr. Povey at 985-0940, or contact any of the pubs that have teams. Spectators are more than welcome to take in the games each Monday night at any of the establishments where the matches are held. brings people into their egtablishments on Monday Judy Frodts evenings.
