Z Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, November 9, 1993 --13 4 New owner finds fashion world a challenge by Heather McCrae When Carol Ward heard that Daphne's and Tom's Back Porch were for sale last summer she jumped at the opportunity of owning both businesses. That choice ended an eight year career in law enforcement and headed her into the fashion industry, a decision she hasn't regretted one bit. Carol had shopped at Daphne's for years and was a frequent patron at Tom's Back Porch, enjoying the variety in the menu, good food and cozy atmosphere. During her high school days she had worked part-time in retail sales and had done a bit of modelling. The fashion industry intrigued Carol and tucked away in the back of her mind she had always had the idea of owning her own ladies clothing store. Her first week as owner of Daphne's, at the end of August, was a whirlwind of ordering the spring and summer collections for 1994 and Carol found the experience to be an exciting one "I find the fashion world so new and exciting" says Carol, adding "it's a good challenge and Carol Ward, left, Is the new owner of Daphne's and Tom's Front Porch. Donna Cultrera right, Is the manager of Daphne's and Aisla Vos Is a waitress at Tom's Front Porch See story stimulating!" In a recent interview with the Citizen, Carol says she's really fortunate to have Donna Cultrera working as manager of the store. Donna has been with the store for four and a half years and kriows the fashion industry inside out. With Donna's capable assistance "the task of wondering what to order has been made much easier." "There have been a few frustrations, such as setting up the proper banking procedures for the store" says Carol, "but the fun I'm having overcomes these necessary chores." And life is a lot easier now too as she has no more long commuting distances to and from work, just a 15 minute drive form her home in Uxbridge. As for Tom's Back Porch, major renovations were made, moving the tea room from the back of Settlement House to the front overlooking Queen Street and changing it to a country bistro Of course, a name change was in order and Tom's Back Porch has now become Tom's Front Porch! Carol admits she loves to cook and certainly has had lots of experience. Being the youngest girl in a family of 15 children she started cooking at the tender age of eight years "If | had the time I'd kitchen preparing the food" she says be in the Jeff Haugen is the chef and nakes all the food from scratch rs delicious soups, a imptious caesar salad luscious crepes and mouth watering desserts.
