Z Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, November 9, 1993 --33 4 MoJacks undefeated in last six games Playing and winning through adversity is a sign of any good team, no matter what the sport. The Port Perry MoJacks have done just that as the team is un-defeated in its last six outings despite a string of injuries and suspensions that kept several players out of the lineup. With a record of five wins, one loss and two ties, the team has a firm hold on second place (12 points) in the Central Junior C Hockey League, just three back of Uxbridge Bruins who have played two more games. These teams meet Friday night in Uxbridge in what will be a proverbial four-pointer. Head coach Brad Menzies said Sunday night he is very pleased with the team's performance lately, especially the fact that three of the four wins have come on the road. "We had a good team effort tonight," (Sunday) he said, referring to a very solid 5-1 victory over the last place Bobcaygeon Bullets. "I don't have any complaints," (about the way the team has played). In Sunday's game against the Bullets, the MoJacks were in: an explosive mood at the Scugog Arena. Were it not for some outstanding work by Bullet netminder Chad Van Dam who faced more than 50 shots, MoJacks could easily have run the score into double numbers. After spotting the visitors a quick goal by Ryan Pogue in the opening minute, MoJacks went to work and buzzed around the Bullet zone firing pucks at Van Dam from all angles. He turned them back until the final minute of the frame when Jason Cochrane deflected one behind him on a power play set- up from Steve Laird and Clair Cornish. And with two seconds left in the first, Todd Dennis scored on another deflection with help from Keith Leslie and Cornish. 'MoJacks kept the heat on during the second period and Laird made it 3-1 as he banged in a rebound from the side of the net. Jason Cochrane really put this one away as he scored a short-handed marker at the 12 minute mark. Cochrane went the length of the ice on a breakaway and beat Van Dam with a shot to the trapper side. It was Cochrane who rounded out the scoring in the third with a power play goal as he was set up in the slot by Cornish. It was Cochrane's third of the game and Cornish's third assist. On Friday night, MoJacks were in Bobcaygeon and got two-goal efforts from Brad MacArthur and Keith Leslie en route to a 6-3 victory. Other goals came from Steve Poirier and defenseman Steve Staniland with his first of the campaign. James Patterson of the Port Midgets was in the cage for the MoJacks as Shawn Larocque was at PPHS Commencment, and Rick Hutchinson is recovering from an appendix operation last Thursday morning. The MoJacks started their busy week on a positive footing last Tuesday night in Bowmanville as captain Clair Cornish scored a natural hat trick in the first seven minutes to lead the team to a comfortable 6-2 victory over the Eagles. ~ And 24 hours later, it was Cornish who fired the winner midway through the third period to snap a 2-2 tie as the MoJacks went on to clip the Little Britain Merchants 5-2. In the game against the Eagles, Cornish notghed his first at the 26 second mark, fired one of the power five minutes later and then hit for a short-handed marker at 7:46. Other scorers in this one were Keith Leslie, Steve Poirier (with his second in as many games) and Todd Dennis back in the line up after sitting out a two-game suspension. The game last Wednesday evening at the Little Britain Arena was an un-tidy affair as both clubs seemed to have trouble generating momentum. MoJacks got on the board first at 9:54 of frame one when Steve Laird jumped on a big rebound b - The Port Perry MoJacks spent most of Sunday's Junior C game In the Bobcaygeon Bullets end of the rink and they came out of it with a 5-1 victory at the Scugog Arena. The score could easily have been double were It not for a strong game by Bullet goalle Chad Van Dam. and went the length of the ice to beat Larocque. MoJacks finally kicked out of cruise control at the 8:00 mark as Cornish swept a shot into the net with Jason Cochrane and Todd Smart getting the assists. This goal came just seconds after Cornish had missed putting the puck into a wide open net. Just 36 seconds later, Jeremy Ross made it 4-2 as he flipped a back-hand over Fleming with Keith Leslie getting the assist. Merchants yanked Fleming with just over a minute to play and Jason Cochrane salted things away when he sent the puck 120 feet into the empty cage. Brother Gavin and Keith Leslie drew the assists. This game was anything but a classic but the MoJacks were more than happy to get out of the Little Britain Arena with . two huge points. Larocque had another fine after Shannon Todd had worked into the clear. Merchants got that one back two minutes later on a long shot by captain Jeff Jenkins that seemed to hit the cross bar behind Shawn Larocque. At 14:05, Shannon Todd put MoJafks ahead 2-1 on a low shot from the slot that beat Don Fleming cleanly. Laird picked up the assist on that one. Merchant sniper Jeff Adams tied the game at 2-2 early in the second period when the MoJacks tried to get too fancy while enjoying a five minute power play. Adams grabbed a loose puck at his own blue line CHES PORT PERRY & DISTRICT MINOR SOFTBALL * Coaching Applications' are now being accepted for all "Rep" and House League Coaching positions for the 1994 season, A brief summary of your coaching background would be useful. On a couple of occasions he skated well away from' his crease to cover a loose puck and was able to get away without any damage. SLAPSHOTS: With netminder Rick Hutchinson expected to beswout of action for four to six weeks after an appendix operation last week, coach Menzies said he'll be using Rick Patterson of the Port Midgets wherever possible and won't hesitate to put him in to give Shawn Larocque a breather. Commenting on the up- coming game on Friday against the first place Bruins, Menzies said the key for the MoJacks will be solid defense, especially in their own zone. Bruins are seven, two and one to date, three points up on the ModJacks. Nathan Brown (shoulder) and Brad Moase (knee) are on the mend and could be ready for action this coming weekend. Brad MacArthur turned in a robust game Sunday night against the Bullets, finishing his checks and knocking people down. Clair Cornish had three assists on Sunday night and could have had three goals at least. He rang one off the iron, fired several pucks right into Van Dam's pads and launched a couple of rockets that missed the net. ModJacks are getting solid work along the blue line from Staniland, G. Cochrane, Kevin Vivian, Brad Bagshaw, Kevik McDonald and Duane Empringham, as the team has surrendered just 13 goals in the last six games. MoJacks will be at home to the Little Britain Merchants this coming Sunday night Game time is 8:00 PM. \ Yew «: Disc Jockey os Eve Dance FRIDAY, DECEMBER 31st, 1993 - 8 PM Tmmacatlate Conception Church Hall Music by : Travellin® Wilburs HN Singing Duet Door Prizes @ Continuous Buffet B Spot Prizes 540. per Couple BM Advance ticket sales only.
