Pamphlet warns of catastrophies Durham Environmental Network (DEN) has been working to convey an important message to local petiticians and educators which will hopefully help return the environmental agenda to the minds of at least some of Durham Region's citizens and "politicians A pamphletegntitled "World Scientists' Warning to Humanity", from the Union of Concerned Scientists, has been distributed to each of the eight municipal Councils in the Region Each individual Councillor has received his or her own copy. The pamphlet has also been sent to each of the schools in Durham, to the attention of Environmental Liaison and Science Head teachers Provincial and federal politicians throughout Durham will also be receiving copies of the pamphlet in the near future The Union of Concerned Scientists was formed in the US "in 1969 to advance responsible public policies in areas where technology plays a critical role. Their warning was sent out a year ago now to the government leaders of all nations, and at the time it was sent, it had been signed by 1670 scientists, including 104 Nobel laureates. Some highlights from the pamphlet: "Human beings and the natural world are on a collision course . . .If not checked, many of our current practices put at serious risk the future that we wish for human society and the plant and @nimal kingdoms Fundamental changes are urgent if we are to avoid the collision our present course will bring about No more than one ore few decades remain befor& the chance to avert the threats we now confront will baglost and the prospects for humanity immeasurably diminished." Further reading of the U.C.S. warning pamphlet notes that all sectors of society must become involved, "convincing reluctant leaders and reluctant governments and reluctant peoples themselves to effect the needed changes." Environmental issues seem lately to have taken a back seat to economic concerns in' the minds of many citizens Members of Durham Environmental Network hope the circulation of the "World Scientists' Warning to Hurbanity" pamphlet will help people come to the realization that the attitude that we can afford to view the envir t and the y as irreconcilable issues is one we can no longer afford. Any individuals who would like to have a look at the Warning pamphlet are welcome to call (905) 985- 3225 and request that a copy be mailed out to them.
