PHIL BP PONTIAC BUICK LIMITED 10 Vanedward Drive, Port Perry ex 05-8474 cv sezss 'Serving Port Perry and the Durham Region since 1976 Well known Ontario artist James Lumbers was at Framer's Gallery on Sunday afternoon. Mr. Lumbers (at left) is seen with Gallery owners Warren and Tracy Strong with his latest work, called 'On the Beat.' See story for detalls. Artist James Lumbers has created a style of his own There is no mi \g the art, or genious of James Lumbers. His very popular series "Moments in Time" invoke a feeling of warm nostalgia, a longing for yesteryear when life moved at a slower pace and was less complicated. In each of his works in acrylic in the "Moments" series there is one of more "ghost" figures which bring special meaning to the art. Lumbers was in Port Perry last Sunday afternoon at Framer's Gallery which was crowded with people devoted to his work. Of special interest was the latest in the series called "On the Beat." It is a simple yet complex work showing the front of a 1950's grocery store. A policeman, on his knees, his VAN CAMP & KELLER CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS rolled up is pumping the tire of a young girl's 's bike while the shop keeper looks on and a small dog gazes at a fire hydrant. Standing behind the young officer is another policeman in full uniform and cap, looking very much like current Toronto Police chief William McCormack. Lumbers said he is trying to come up with a device that "shows what was with what is." Not suprisingly, "On the Beat" prints are proving very popular, especiziiy with police officers across Ontario. An accomplished professional painter since 1970, Lumbers first painted landscapes and animals, the native people in Canada's north, portraits of the late John Diefenbaker. income tax planning and preparation financial, estate and retirement planning accounting, auditing and related services 204 CASIMIR STREET PORT PERRY, ONTARIO L9L 1B7 085-9725 7 So. And yes, he sid, they have become his trademark as an artist. he now divides his time between his home near Cobourg and a cottage on Georgian Bay Asked what his favourite piece is and he replied, "usually the one | am working on at that time because | am putting so much energy into it." Lumbers said he draws his artistic inspiration from the work of Andrew Wyeth and Tom Thompson. "Moments in Time" have such simple images. Yet the message is more complex. He wants to bring forward the qualities of the past when life was "kinder, gentler." He writes "community values we shared so few years ago are fast disappearing from today's urban centres. There has been too much change too fast It is my hope the viewer will share this empathy towards past values and help turn society around, away from violence and towards humanity and benevolence." Other works by Lumbers on display and for sale at Framer's Gallery include the marvellous "A Boy and His Dream" which shows hockey star Wayne Gretzky in uniform of the Los Angeles Kings. In the background is the young Gretzky (sbout seven years old) and his famous father Walter standing on the back-yard rink. "The Sun Never Sets" shows an image of Ernest Hemingway as a young man seated in a book-lined room working at a manual typewriter. "Morning Reflection" is a work that brings a feeling of warmth as it shows a dog and cat beside a gentle stream with the image of a man (their owner?) with a fishing pole. Framers Gallery owner Warren Strong said he was pleased to have an artist with the stature of James Lumbers at his gallery. This is the first time Lumbers has appeared at such a function in Port Perry.
