Elaine Lally starting to recover from accident by Heather McCrae Christmas is a special time of year. It's a time for hope, peace, Jjoy, love and miracles. Just ask Ann Lally and she'll grin from ear to ear, declaring emphatically "miracles do happening one happened to "What Ann'is referring to is her daughter, Elaine, and her long road to recovery after a tragic car accident September 26 outside Winnipeg. Elaine and her friend, Ginny Van Veghel of Port Perry, were involved in an accident. Ginny sustained minor injuries and was released from the Health Science Centre Hospital in Winnipeg that same day but Elaine wasn't as fortunate. Because of serious head injuries, the young woman had lapsed into a coma and was admitted to the hospital. Within 24 hours, Ann, accompanied by her fiance, David Dexter, and youngest daughter, Erin, were at her daughter's bedside. Elaine's father, Jack, and his wife were there for her too. Later, 'big brother', John and step-brother, Jim, came to visit. Soon after, countless family members and friends travelled across the province to see Elaine. was felt by the medical staff if she was surrounded by her family and many friends, she might respond and come out of her coma. It took one friend, Andy Elliott, two days to hitchhike from Thunder Bay to Winnipeg. hitch a ridq'home Wigh Rob had come to visit from the north. "So many people cared el Elaine and prayed for that miraculous recovery", says Ann. On October 16, still in a coma, Elaine was transferred by air ' her. The nurses soon noticed Elaine would respond upon hearing her mother's voice and suggested she make a fape of her voice and the nurses would play it in her absence. n laughs now when she recalls\ making that tape as her she cannot sing! "But eo that tape, singing bul to the C ity Memorial Hospital in Port Perry. Speaking to the Citizen on the weekend, Ann recalled that flight. She says the Angels of Flight, based out of Peterborough, flew her daughter home to Port Perry in a Rockwell Commander 700, a small aircraft that had room only for the pilot, co-pilot, a nurse, Ann and her daughter on a stretcher. During the flight the pilot had to-touch down twice to refuel. "Seven hours in a small plane, with no toilets and little stretch room was an experience in itself" laughs Ann. "But the people were so kind and concerned." Two and a half weeks ago Elaine came out of her coma while convalescing in Port Perry. She could open her eyes and move her limbs somewhat but couldn't communicate. Upon this improvement, Elaine was transferred to Oshawa General Hospital for an assessment of her condition. Throughout this ordeal Ann has visited her daughter ras 1 y, 8p y to 8 Wilson Ultra Flex Glove Four Bag Boy Automatic NOW $139.99 ... $89.99 DRIVERS '845' Great Scot (midsize) Pro Select (Dyn. She also taped her voice telling the story of The Velveteen Rabbit, a story of how the power of love brings a boy's favourite toy bunny to life. And finally, last Wednesday, December 6, the miracle happened. Ann and her daughter Janice, had gone to the hospital to visit Elaine and when Ann stepped out of the room for a minute, Elaine opened her eyes, looked at her sister, and said very plainly, "Where's Mom?" You can imagine Ann's surprise, joy and relief when she re-entered that room and found her daughter actually talking to them, amidst many happy tears. Her daughter was coming back to her! Ann says when her own mother asked what she wanted for Christmas a while back, she answered, "1 want Elaine to get better for Christmas". "My wish has come true" grins Ann, "and it's because of the prayers of so many people."
