But two months later she was back in action again, this time as the coordinator of the candy striper program. "I could see there was a definite need for a coordinator to promote this worthwhile program" says Joan, "and it's turned out ta be a very one." These 18 caring young women have all shown admirable qualities and the program is becoming increasingly more popular, so much so that there are now seven girls on the waiting list. The hospital held a mother/daughter dinner in its library on Monday, December 6, to honour these girls but it was also a time to say farewell to Joan Godley, too. Due to failing health Joan is retiring from her position. "T've had a very lucky life" says Joan, "really happy, and I accept anything that comes my way. Life has its compensations." Joan has always enjoyed working with people and after she resigned from teaching piano a few years ago she decided she'd like to work with people who weren't as fortunate as she, It was then when she volunteered to work at the hospital, and it wasn't long before she Became the coordinator of the adult volunteer pi "Being a volunteer in such a worthwhile program (adult and Joan Godley retires youth) gave me a good lift" says this spunky lady. "I've had some wonderful times and have never seen a hospital before where there's so much activity!" Many hugs and tears were exchanged at the dinner as Joan said her farewell and received a standing ovation. Ruth has worked alongside Joan for years, and the latter says, "she's been such a wonderful help in the program".
