Fah =» 32 -- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, December 14, 1993 The SHL is a local hockey success story Every Sunday morning they start arriving at the Scugog Arena just after 7:00 o'clock oki rubbing the sleep from ir eyes. They are the playéts in the Scugog Hockey League (SHL), sometimes called incorrectly the Sunday morning league. In an age when enrolment in minor hockey is dropping in . some communities, the same is most certainly not true in the SHL, a league for players from their eanly 20's to their early 50%. In fact, the SHL can only be considered ® major success story as it is now in its 13 season. From start of six teams and about 75 players 13 years ago, the league now boasts ten teams and about 140 players. And says, SHL president Jim Grosvenor, the League could easily expand by another couple of teams at least if there was sufficient ice time at the Scugog Arena. The entire purpose of the League is to provide recreation hockey for adults, said Mr. Grosvenor and the SHL takes great pains to make sure that there is balance and parity on* the ten teams. . This is accomplished by an annual draft held before the teams ever hit the ice. All players are ranked (A, B, C, and D) according ty with C being averag e draft assures that each ends up with the the same number of players of comparable ability. The*result shows up on the ice each Sunday morning where the scores are close most of the time and "blow-outs" are rere. This may be recreation hockey (no body checking, no slap shots) but make no mistake about the calibre of play.on the ice. It is fast, crisp, well played and at times aggressive fueled by that competitive instinct that is natural to hockey players of any age. Evengwith some in their early 20's with ° good wheels, the League is not being dominated by "young turks", 2 On thé contrary, Mr. Grosvenor points out that the average age is 37 years and of the original 80 who first laced" them up, 13. years ago, 27 are still enjoying the game. | 'And that's the real bottom line with the SHL--the love of the_ game, Canada's national sport. Some of the SHL "originals" include John Delorme, at 53, the League's "elder statesman" and probably the only owner of a pair of tube skates. Others are' Lee Steeves, Jing Duncan, Jim Beatty, Bob Lee," Carl Fitfgerald, Brian "captain" Callery, and Bob Strickert, the only goalie from the original six. For these guys, and other: there may be a bit of grey "showing around the temples, and they may sit out the odd shift, but the fire still burns when it comes to this great game they enjoy so much. Of course, there is a huge amount of camaraderie among the players which is almost as important as the play on the ice, In recent years as the waiting grow lists' and more "youngsters" in their 20s want to join the league, there has been talk about moving to two divisions--one for those over 35 and one open for any-age. Mr. Grosvenor said he doesn't see this-happening in the near future, For one thing, there may got be enaqugh players under 35 to form six teams. And there is not the ice time available now to move to two divisions with six teams each, he said. But a 12-team League would be ideal, he stressed. Not only does the SHL provide a superb chance for adults to play recreational (but highly: competitive) hockey each week, it is.an economic boon as well. The anpual budget is now in he S500 Hie me dt prime rates) and nearly 150 adults involved, the purchase of equipment, sticks, even skate sharpening gives*# boost to local shops.
