(OSI) signed an agreement Monday giving O8I full responsibility for the delivery of genetic improvement programs and services to the swine industry. This includes the operation of both the Ontario Swine Improvement Program and the swine artificial insemination business in Woodstock. Ag Minister Elmer Buchanan said he is "pleased by the achievements of the program over the years and encouraged that this industry organization is willing to provide the leadership that will ensure onging genetic improvement for producers." A recent task force recommended that the industry take the lead in delivering the service to hog farmers. The OSI was set up last year as a non- profit corporation. Under the terms of the agreement Monday, nine Ag ministry staff now working on the program will be offered jobs by OSI geneticist and swine specialist. These include a OSI to manage swine genetics for the province Farming operations that produce and sell genetically superior breeding animals participate in the program. Genetic research and technical support, swine genetic advisory services are part of the program. Pork Producers Marketing Board chair John Lichti said the move brings together all the players in the industry.
