Chief McCagherty said the Learning Centre will allow the Police force to reach "un-tapped resources in the community." There were many dignitaries on hand last Friday morning for the ribbon cutting ceremony at the College including president Gary Polansky, former Police Chief Dave Edwards and Police Services chairman Jim Witty. Mr. Polansky said "learning is our business," and Durham College is "pleased to be a part of +" this strategic alliance." Other police forces in the province have expressed a strong interest in this program and will be monitoring the Learning Centre over the next year or so. The Centre is under the command of Inspector Greg Reid. Day to day operations will be under the command of a Staff sgt, with three sergeants, two constables and two civilian support staff. The Centre will have office space of about 1200 square feet, access to another 4,000 square feet where such training as "use of force," baton training, self defense and use of the new " "pepper spray."
