What this means is that 79 per cent of the 42 CHS students who took part in the writing review, submitted work that was within the top three standards. In releasing the results last week, CHS principal Mickie Petursson and English department head Susan Ellis said they were pleased with the grades. The provincial average was 64 per cent and the Durham secondary school average was 58 per cent. However, Ms. Petursson stressed that while it is gratifying to see the results, "the most important thing is for schools to take those results and start working towards improvements." Already the school has come up with an action plan for improved writing that includes wider use of computers by English students, the establishment of a .HALENDA'S FRESHNESS ... QUALITY ... SAVINGS ... ALWAYS!!! Halenda's school paper where students will, be encouraged to publish their work, and a stress on "holistics," which evaluates the overall scope of any piece of writing. Ms. Petursson noted that at CHS the ratio of students to computers is 5:1 (compared with a Durham average of 17:1) and she said access to computers is proving beneficial for students in their writing. She also noted that 80 per cent of CHS Grade 12 students in 1992 indicated they enjoyed writing. The writing review was done by students in the advanced courses only as CHS does not offer programs at the general or basic levels. Durham gets 50 G's Durham Region has received a $50,000 grant from the provincial government to develop a "Geographic Information System" suitable for transportation planning and analysis. The grant was announced Monday by Durham East MPP Gord Mills who said the $50,000 will be matched by Durham Region. "I think the (Durham) council should be very grateful for this contribution," said Mr. Mills, The system will centralize different kinds of road and traffic information on a geographic basis. It will allow easier and faster access for planning and development. "Durham Region will definitely benefit with the use of this system," said the MPP. Don't be Disappointed!
