= v 4 ----s hot as MoJacks win 5th in a row The Port Perry MoJacks pushed their winning streak to five games Sunday night at the Scugog Arena as Shawn Larocque turned aside 33 shots in a 7-0 victory over the last place Bobcaygeon Bullets. Larocque was rock solid for the green'and white, especially in the third period when the MoJacks took a string of penalties that left the team short-handed for much of the frame. It was Lafocque's second shut- out against the Bullets this MoJack goalle Shawn Larocque has had the number of the Bobcaygeon Bullets the last two games as he shut them out by scores of 8-0 and 7-0. Larocque was very sharp In the 7-0 win on home ice Sunday night. See story. season as he white-washed them 8-0 in a game two weeks ago in "Ya, you could say I like playing against these guys," the Port Perry native said with a big grin as he left the ice Sunday night with the shutout and the important two points safely in his gocket. Al out-shot 33-20 in this one, MoJacks were never in deep trouble as they took a 2-0 lead lead after 20 minutes, upped it to five-zip by the end of the second and added a couple more in the third just for good measure. Steve Laird, who has been scoring on a regular basis lately, popped home a pair in less than a minute in the second petiod to lead the scoring. Singles went to Keith Leslie, Jason Cochrane, Kevin McDonald, Steve Staniland, and Brad McArthur. Jeremy Roas helped the cause with two assists as did Brad Moase who again turned in a solid game along the blue line. MoJacks were in Uxbridge Friday evening for a match with the first place Bruins and returned home with two points on a 7-5 win. Ian Titterton had a pair with singles to Kevin McDonald, Steve Laird, Clair Cornish, Shannon Todd and Keith Leslie McDonald had three assists, Gavin Cochrane, Jason Cochrane and Todd Dennis had two each. Rick Hutchinson was between the pipes and faced 36 shots while Jeff Reid saw 22 in the Bruin net. Bricknell finds trade to the Falls to his liking It's only about 100 miles from Newmarket to Niagara Falls, but for Corey Bricknell it was like going from one side of the earth to the other. The 18 year old Port Perry native was part of a 10-player sway between the Newmarket Royals and Niagara Falls Thunder of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) back: on November 11. The move to the "Honeymoon Capital of the World" has given the big defenseman a new lease on life. "I'm very happy with the way things are going and the way I'm playing," he told the Citizen while home for Christmas to enjoy some time with his family before returning to the Falls Boxing Day to get ready for a December 28 tilt with Guelph. As this is his NHL draft season, Bricknell was less than pleased with the amount of ice time he had been getting with the Royals. He was essentially the fifth defenseman, getting about ten shifts per game. He went\to management and asked to be traded to any team that could give him more playing time. About a week later he was informed to pack his bags for the Falls, part of a massive ten player Swap tha hat also sent Royal e in the same rienily In the 12 games since the big trade, Bricknell has collected five assists and is playing . between 20 and 25 minutes each game What's more, he really enjoys the way Thunder head coach Randy Hall and defensive specialist Chris Johnstone make time to work with the players one on one. "They make use of videos a lot to point out what we are doing right and wrong on the ice and they hold meetings to talk to the players," he said. He also finds the players stick together more off the ice as almost all live in the same residential neighbourhood where Bricknell boards with a family who have two young children. And the Thunder is starting to win a few games and put some fans back in the building for home games. The 6' 2° 190 pound Bricknell, who turned 18 this October, played most of his minor hockey in Port Perry and credits Jim Burnett with a lot of help and rp coached Bricknell as a pee- wee and after he moved on to play Junior B in Oshawa and with the OHL in Newmarket, Jim always took time to stay in touch. "1 really want to thank him a lot," he said, Jim Burnett, of course is the father of George who coaches Cape Breton in the AHL and was coach with the Thunder for a couple of seasons. Bricknell likes to play a "stay at home mind the fort" style of defense which means he will never lead defensemen in scoring. Prior to the trade he has four points with the Royals and has added five assists with the Thunder in a dosen With the Junior draft coming up in June, Bricknell said his agent has been in touch with several clubs including the Flyers and Panthers but he really doesn't care what puts his name on the list. expects to return to the Falls next season for another year of J A The young man is looking forward to the rest of this season with the Thunder, thanks to that ~ Christmas present that arrived six weeks early. For the Bruins, Don Gillies had two with singles from Ryan MacKenzie, Gerry Catherwood and Brandon Pridham. The MoJacks won their third straight game last Thursday evening at the Scugog Arena as they dropped the Lakefield Chiefs 5-3 with a solid overall effort. In front of a very sparse crowd MoJacks took a 1-0 lead early in the first when Steve Laird shovelled in a back-hand from the side of the Lakefield net. Nathan Brown drew the lone assist. It was Laird again early in the second with a nice goal to puke it 2-0 on a set-up from Clair Cornish and Kevin McDonald. That was short-lived, however as the Chiefs got on the board 45 seconds later as Mike Williams bounced in off the arm of Shawn Larocque. Still in the second, Keith Leslie took advantage of a MoJack three-on-one break, taking a centering pass from Todd Dennis to fire a shot behind Dave Ireland in the Chiefs net Chris Longfield of the Chiefs brought his team to within one goal at 11:39 as he snapped a quick shof that caught the twine just under the cross bar Jeremy Ross, with his 4th of the season, put MoJacks ahead 4-2 at 11:54, tapping in his own rebound off a shot from the point by Gavin Cochrane. Todd Smart drew the other assist on this one Chiefs seemed to have a territorial advantage in this period as they out-shot MoJacks 12-7, forcing' Larocque to come up with some timely stops. Early in the third, Paddy MacDonald found the net behind Larocque with a rising shot and the Chiefs once more were within tne goal. They applied a fair amount of pressure in the MoJack zone through the final period but Larocque held his ground until captain Clair Cornish settled the issue st 17:50. Taking a pass from Todd Dennis, the veteran did what he does best. He worked his way through the slot and snapped a low wrist shot to the corner of the Chief net. Larocque 'faced 37 shots in the MoJack cage and his fine play was a big reason why the green and white came out of this one with an important two points. At the other end of the pond, MoJacks fired 25 chunks of rybber in the direction of Dave Ireland. Both teams stuck strictly to hockey as ref John Gerelus had an easy time handing out just four minors to the MoJacks and a pair to the Chiefs SLAPSHOTS: The MoJacks have 26 points to date (12 wins, two ties) and have played well at both ends of the pond over the last five os. They have scored 33 goals in this five game winning stretch while giving up just nine, including two shut-outs. The team has been getting excellent work along the blue line and netminders Hutchinson and Larceque have been strong in the cage. MoJacks have two games left in 1993 and head coach Brad Menzies would like nothing better than a couple of wins to usher in the New Year. Turn to page 26
