» Pee Wee B Doors take it to Uxbridge On Saturday December 18, the PeeWee "B™s were hosting Uxbridge for their fourth meeting this season. The three previous games were riever decided till the third period se never count Uxbridge out of it. . Uxbridge came out fast making Port Perry play some defensive hockey for the first four minutes. _ At 11:14, Scott Sanderson put a nice pags into Ryan McQuade deep in the Uxbridge zone out front to Travis Pickard as he scored to give Port a 1-0 lead. Nick Pelyk and Blayne Kinnunen were deing some nice checking to keep Uxbridge on theif toes at 9:42. Everytime Uxbridge came into the Port nice poke Shock to send them away Fr nded was really flying causing everyone to keep their heads up. Twice in the first period Aaron Chambers and Ryan McQuade had to clear Uxbridge players out of the crease to give their goalie a chance to make the save and he did. + With Port sporting a 1-0 lead, they sent rush after rush into the Uxbridgé zone but the Big Goalie was Hot. The Smirf Line (Wordley-Kinnunen and Pelyk) was giving the Uxbridge goaltender fits and getting some good chances but they got shut down. The first period ended 1-0 for Port Perry Perry zone in the early going Ryan McQuade was there with a * In A Rink Somewhere By Jim Hughson, Sportscaster The Sports Network The Courtnall brothers will talk on the phone Christmas Day as they 80 almost overy day during the hockey season. Then they'll carryon crowding a couple of weeks into two days, like other NHL players, and get back to work. That's how the holiday season works for hockey players, family or foe. It's been nine years since Geol! and Russ Courtnall spent the Yuletide side by side and that was a memorable octasion. Russ was a first-year Toronto Maple Leal, fresh from the Olympics of '84. Geoff was an aspiring Boston Bruin, playing in the minors at Hershey Geoff and his wite Penni drove to Toro "ind booked into a hotel room nekt to Maple Leaf Garder +. three piled Christmas presents under the TV stand, had a restaurant turkey dinner and, by all accounts, a grand time. It's not the place, it's what you make of it Since then, their paths have been top far apart to cross at Christmas or any other time during a busy season, except when they're opponents. But they keep the phone lines buzzing daily because the Courtnalis are not only brothers but best friends. They're three years apart in age, a gap narrowed by hockey when Russ, the younger, so excelled at the game he played on Geoff's 11- year-old team. But they'd been playing together every Saturday anyway, at Victoria's Racquet Club, when their dad took them to father-and-son hockey. oh iit Playars, the) wre Wey. Not only did they get to stay in ther on the same line and roomed baal with the iii of the Western League. Russ was a free-wheeling centre in his draft year while Geoff was a rugged winger, back with the team as an undrafted overage player. It was a year 1o remember for both. "Playing together brought out the best in us," recalled Geoff before he suited up for the Vi ucks the other day. "1 stuck up for Russ, he had a great year had seven offers 10 sign with NHL teams by Christmas, | wouldn't be here if we hadn't played together that year." Obviously, that holiday was a joyous one. At the end of the season, Russ was drafted in the first round (seventh overall) by the Maple Leafs and Geoff accepted the Boston Bruins' offer. They parted company having combined for 77 goals and 211 points in their final junior season and they've not played together since, Russ has moved from Toronto to Montreal, on to Minnesota and now Dallas where he still exhibits all the flash Me did ten years ago. Geoff has played for five teams and averaged 30 goals a season. He's close 10 home, has a restaurant business going on the side and hopes 10 stay in Vancouver. They've played almost the same number of NHL games and scored the same.number of points. The Courtnalls are close and always know. sach others numbers, statistical and phone. If the opportunity arises 10 play together again they'll both skate a mile to make it happen and not just 10 cut down on the phone bill "Most brothers never get a chance to play together, It would be great," says Geoff. i not, another hotel Christmas with the gift piled under a TV "lim Hughson is sponsored by AAV FAY g Fat YAMAHA The LIL I Port struck early in the second Jiom Hughson, i i i } i period when Travis Pickard put a nice pass to Alex Wordley to Derek Campbell whe was in alone and scored on a nice shot to the top corner to give Port a 2- 0 lead. Brad Johnston, Ryan McQuade and Blayne Kinnunen were really playing aggressively. Scott Harper and Jeff Neal were doing a good job on defence to keep the puck out of the Port Perry end of the rink. Nick Pelyk wp ving a good night settifig many scoring chanced up and also handing © out some good bodychecks. Scott Harper was having a good night at the blueline making any Uxbridge player think twice before he came into the Port Perry zone. ¥ Uxbridge scored at 4:52 to close the gap to 2-1. With the second period winding down and Port in control, Travis Pickard; Derek Campbell and Alex Wordley came into the Uxbridge zone on a three man breakaway and Alex shot a high one in the top corner to give Port a 3-1 lead. There wasn't anymore scoring in the second period. The third period wasn't a pretty one. Uxbridge tried to run Port through the end of the rink but they didn't win at that part of the game either as they found themselves down more often than standing. Usbridge had played their best and frustration was settling in as playing Catch Up Hockey wasn't in the cards. Sportsmanship was left back in Uxbridge as it wasn't being displayed insthe last two minutes of this game. Even with the rough stuff they couldn't get by the Pelyks, Kinnunens, Johnstons, Harpers etc because they were still playing hockey the old way. Playing in goal for Port Perry was Mike MacLennan. The Overhead Doors hockey club would like to wish everybody a very Merry Christmas and hope to see everyone at their tournament on Detmber 29.
