The survey was conducted last spring by the School's 10/10 Stay in School Committee. The results were surprising, said committee members Doug Taylor and Nicole Gibson, herself a former drop-out. "We learned that grade 10 seems to be the year that more students consider leaving school and therefore, the year that is most crucial to counsel students about the benefits of staying in school until graduation," she said. Of the 1100 students at PPHS, 840 completed the survey questionaire. The results also indicated a downtrend in student attitudes towards school at the grade nine and ten levels, which reversed itself in the following grades. Students also expressed a strong opinion about the need for good relationships with teachers and increased support for students who are single parents. The survey was designed to deal with reasons why students should stay in school and to determine reasons whystudents opt to drop out of school. School counsellor Cindy Cole said "we need to continpe to expand on the positives about staying in school." The 10/10 Stay in School Committee is made up of about 15 students who are still in school or have dropped out and. dropped back in again.
